Getty ImagesNotre Dame’s upset of Michigan State propelled the Irish up both the Associated Press and coaches’ polls, but it also came at a rather significant defensive cost.
Head coach Brian Kelly confirmed Sunday afternoon that Jamoris Slaughter suffered an Achilles injury during the win over the Spartans. As a result, the safety will miss the remainder of the season.
The senior defensive back suffered the injury on the first play of the second half.
Slaughter had started the first three games of the 2012 season, and has started 19 of the 39 games in which he’s played in his Irish career.
Sophomore Matthias Farley is listed as Slaughter’s backup on ND’s most recent depth chart.
So ND has one corner who was moved from the running back position and has only three games under his belt as a starter. They have another corner who’s a true freshman that was a running back moved to the corner position, and they also have a redshirt freshman safety who took Slaughter’s place.
My hat goes off to Kelly. Walk into Sparty Stadium in prime time with that kind of a secondary — not to mention a redshirt freshman QB — and beat #10 Michigan State 20-3? That’s just impressive. They didn’t even give up a touchdown with two running backs as corners!
Luck of the Irish.
everett golsen, glad to see him doing good being from S.C.but hate to see a youngman go down with an injury at anytime, especially when they’re playing well.maybe steve spurrier should move a few of our rb’s to corner!!!!
Luck of the Irish will run out next weekend as Denard Robinson and company roll into town. GO BLUE!!
