Poll: the No. 1 team in the country is…

Alabama v Arkansas Getty Images

As if there’s even any real doubt this early in the young season, we’ll go just ahead and allow this little charade to play itself out anyway.

USC’s hopes for a run at a national title likely suffered a fatal blow down on The Farm, with the No. 2 Trojans stunned by Stanford 21-14 Saturday.  ‘SC, though, wasn’t the only ranked team to see its unblemished mark marred by defeat.

Four other Top 25 teams also fell from the ranks of the unbeaten — No. 10 Michigan State, No. 13 Virginia Tech, No. 22 Tennessee and No. 25 BYU, although the Spartans and Vols at least lost to ranked squads.

That leaves No. 1 Alabama… and then the rest of the 19 ranked teams still without a loss three weeks into the season.  Of course, that’s merely our opinion, that the Tide is, thus far, head and shoulders and sternum above any other team in the country.

What, though, say ye?  Is Alabama tops, or does another school deserve way-too-early recognition as being the best in the nation?

As always, the drill: vote below, then whine/bitch/moan in the comments section below that.

Meh, we really won’t know til more teams play teams of substance.

USC was never the number 1, 2, or 3 team in the country. Wishful thinking by the AP writers who are tired of Bama & LSU domination. I think Oregon and Thomas are legit though.

If we’re making a pick right now, today it’s Alabama. There’s no argument.

Idfontenot, I couldn’t have said that better myself.; thank you.

I actually just voted for #2 since its obvious Bama, at this point, is the #1 team in the country and I was more interested to see who would finish second in this poll. Tough call between LSU and Oregon, but I went with the Ducks.

At this point it really does not matter, except to give fans something to moan about. Another 4 – 6 weeks of games should give us an accurate idea of the strengths of the teams as they begin to play quality opponents.

    1. Alabama (like southernpatriots has stated since they won the BCS CG, they are the champs should remain so until (and if) some team beats them.
    2. LSU (who else you really going to put here?)
    3. Oregon
    4. Georgia
    5. Florida State
    6. South Carolina
    7. Florida
    8. West Virginia
    9. Texas
    10. Oklahoma

Wow – rednecks in Tuskeyloser actually are #1 at something besides number of trailer parks and first cousin marriage…

Really u put and unimpressive Georgia squad hurdling flstate sorry but Georgia has struggles this yr they better find offense fl state deserves number 4 at least until next week when who should be number 10 Clemson comes to town I think fl state makes a statement in this game my list is like this
    1 alabama
    2 LSU
    3 Oregon
    4 Florida state
    5 Oklahoma
    6 Georgia
    7 south Carolina
    8 west virginia
    9 Clemson
    10 Texas
Florida is ranked way to low to rocket past teams like clemson or even notre dame who did just beat the number 10 team

  14. sssjim7 says: Sep 16, 2012 9:18 AM

I vote Clemson #1… they are really fun to watch:)
They play #5 Florida State next week, so we will see how good they really are…

I am so tired of the media’s hard-on for USC. Maybe the media snobs let the
players give it to them up the a$$ to get the high rankings. They lose the 3rd game of the season….what a surprise. Until the Tide loses they are the only team that should be considered number 1.

I didn’t vote in this poll, and never have, because early season polls are like listening to the breathless claims of some ad huckster that the movie he’s pushing is “the best of the year.” In February.

USC isn’t as bad as they looked last night and Stanford isn’t as good as the Trojans made them look. The Cardinal barely won last year, in overtime, with Luck at the helm and lost to Oregon, while USC beat Oregon.

If USC’s vaunted offensive line (and it was quite offensive) had bothered to show up the results would have been quite different. Don’t expect them to collectively suck every game. With no depth the team likely felt the pressure of having to be perfect every play and it blew up in their faces.

Continued SEC dominance is good for only one part of the country and not for college football as a whole. Another national championship game with SEC teams would likely garner the same audience last year’s game did: Lots of viewers from the southeast and little else. I didn’t watch last year’s game for the same reason many of my friends didn’t. We’d already seen that boring game once. Can’t imagine how poor the TV ratings would be if we get stuck with ‘Bama/LSU again.

I’m hoping for a team from another conference (any other conference at this point) to become good enough to challenge the SEC. Not because I dislike southeast colleges, but because I get sick and tired of all the chest-beating, crowing, classless yahoos on forums like this who obviously live and die with the conference.

You think ‘Bama is going to walk into Oxford and drop 66?? And give the ball back at the end of the game with the ball on the Ole Miss 1-yard line?

    Something big rising in Austin…

They might not drop 66…but they won’t allow 31 points either. As usual, Texass fans continue to overrate their team.

Love them or hate them there is no doubt at this point who the #1 team is as Bama looks more like an NFL expansion team instead of a college football team. USC was WAY overrated from day 1 and should not have been in the top 5. I think Oregon should be #2 and LSU #3 with Florida Stare at #4.

  21. thraiderskin says: Sep 16, 2012 11:07 AM

Number one is more than obvious, but number two is really hard to figure out… I think its LSU, but why not FSU? Oregon is also a contender at this point… I think the top five, with the exception of 1, is a coin toss right now.

  22. kozbee says: Sep 16, 2012 11:13 AM

    It has to be :

    Bama
    LSU
    Oregon

For the simple reason these three teams have nailed the top 5 ranked teams in the country the last few seasons.I would rank Clemson #4 but they can`t make it thru a full season without falling apart.IMOz Stanford just might be on a rise and if so i wish them well as good as the defense played saturday.

  23. bigdinla says: Sep 16, 2012 2:21 PM

I still do nt get the love for Oklahoma . Very mediocre team that has struggled against garbage competition.

  24. timh1955 says: Sep 16, 2012 2:44 PM

I don’t understand why Oklahoma is in the top 5 either. I could understand around 15 but they aren’t a top 5 team.

  25. timh1955 says: Sep 16, 2012 2:51 PM

I’m surprised the people at Boise State haven’t claimed they should be #1 like they do every year even though they play high school teams the majority of the season.

  26. truetarheelfan says: Sep 16, 2012 5:57 PM

Ok do the acc is mediocre?? Fl state on the rise and whether u like it or not legit Clemson is legit the hokies let’s face it always have a head scratcher of a game at least once a yr big 12 is about even with tx wva and k state lets face it oklahoma is not what it was last yr. Nore is ok-state 2 real contenders from each the acc and the big 12 the real mediocre conference this yr… Th disappointing B1G conference clearly the most overrated conference by far this yr… And how does Oregon continue to fly under the radar this team is scary god as is Arizona Stanford and gasp ucla USC isnt as bad as they played yesterday they just don’t have depth… Back to my point if the acc is mediocre than so is the big 12 by my count same number of horrible and mediocre teams and same number of true contenders 2 each

  27. mstiger1 says: Sep 16, 2012 7:47 PM

Hey Truetarheel, why don’t you proof that crap before you post it? What are you talking about rattling on with unintelligible words and run on sentences. By the way Bama and LSU should be #1&2. You forgot to mention them.

  28. truetarheelfan says: Sep 16, 2012 11:04 PM

Hey genius ever think I wasnt responding to u and check my earlier post dummy I have Alabama at 1 and LSU at 2 I wasn’t talking about either one of those teams in my last post I was responding to a different article I thought somehow I ended up back on this page… But some BIG conference fan was blasting va tech for leaving the big east… Wait why am I explaining myself to u… Go eat urself… Ughh if u don’t like my post just thumbs down it after ao many I think ur post goes away friggin idiot

  29. slk018 says: Sep 18, 2012 11:30 AM

Chokelahoma will do just that soon….Their QB is an overrated interception machine. Flrida should be knocking on the top 10 when LSU goes to the swamp in 3 weeks.

Why do the assbag voters rank USC high every year.. Same story every year
