Jerry Sandusky to be sentenced Oct. 9

Found guilty on 45 counts of child-sex abuse this summer, former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky will learn his ultimate fate on Oct. 9.

That’s the sentencing date set for Sandusky by Judge John Cleland, according to the AP. The sentencing will reportedly come after a hearing on whether Sandusky will be designated as a sexually violent predator, which would require lifetime registration with authorities.

Sandusky faces a maximum of 442 years in prison. Whether or not he gets all of them is irrelevant; Sandusky is practically guaranteed to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

NCAA president Mark Emmert levied severe sanctions against the Penn State football program in the wake of the Freeh report that followed Sandusky’s conviction. The report suggests that top PSU officials knew of Sandusky’s crimes, which date back to the 1990’s, and did not take proper measures to report them.
