Carta-Samuels sits atop Vandy’s QB depth chart

After benching his starting quarterback in favor of a former transfer, James Franklin played coy as to who his starter would be when Vanderbilt faced Georgia this weekend.

The depth chart, however, has spoken.

In the most recent one released by the Commodores, Austyn Carta-Samuels is listed as the starter while Jordan Rodgers was listed as the backup. Rodgers had started the last nine games for Vandy, including the first two games of the 2012 season, but was replaced by Carta-Samuels for the Week 3 game against Presbyterian. The Wyoming transfer played well in the 58-0 win over the FCS program, completing 65 percent of his 20 pass attempts for 195 yards, one touchdown and, more importantly, no interceptions.

Franklin said that performance led to Carta-Samuels leapfrogging Rodgers on the depth chart.

“We feel like he has a chance to do some things [to help us],” Franklin said. “I thought he managed the game fairly well. I thought he was poised. I thought after the first couple of throws, he settled down and made some nice decisions. So we have to build on that.”

While Carta-Samuels is currently listed as the No. 1 QB, Franklin added that it will be Wednesday or Thursday before a final decision is made on who will start against the No. 5 Bulldogs.
