The West Virginia Mountaineers are one of my favorite teams outside of the SEC. In fact, for years now, I have said they "were" an stealth SEC team, it is just they didn't tell anyone. I really wanted WVU in the SEC. I sat with Mountaineer Maniacs and found them to be just like LSU fans at Tiger Stadium. I have joined with southernpatriots and wished and dreamed that if somehow Geno Smith could have been on our team (LSU) that probably we would have won several national championships over the last four years.

Geno can make plays where there are no plays and make various receivers, numerous receivers, all look good. We played without a QB, well it seemed like it, for the past 4 years and now have a pro-style rookie QB who is learning and progressing.

I have been up to "God's country" --Morgantown-- on a half dozen occasions over the past years, volunteering with southernpatriots' family, who has gone to the area for the past 25 years or so each Christmas season. They work with other professionals (dentists and doctors) to provide health care for many precious rural people there, working with former Mountaineer players and alums in their work. I have such a love and appreciation in my heart for the people of Central Appalachia. When I have to leave the area and return home to southwestern Louisiana, it always fills my eyes with tears and a big lump in my chest. I think a piece of my heart remains in West Virginia, though I am living and working in Louisiana.

I do not know what Coach Dana Holgorsen, and Coaches De Forest and Patterson can do about the defense. It seems to me that with the offense clicking, that defense is the area that has hurt the team and could again in at least some of the upcoming games. I don't have an answer, but somehow I hope the defense can get it all together or play over their heads if need be. Some very big games are coming up!

Yeah, our WR combo (not as much when we played in Death Valley 2 years ago) was stout last year. JD Woods is NOT a premier WR. I don't care what guys do in Spring game and against inferior competition. WVU's season starts next week (we wont even know from playing Maryland, a truly deplorable team). Hopefully, Woods does step up but he's not even close to as good as Stedman Bailey (our best WR).

I also agree w/ you that WVU may stumble in its first XII game. Our defense is that bad.

@huskerzfan

Its nice to see a presumed UConn fan calling it like it is. I must also point out how good their third WR is-esp. since I see so little mention of him from either local or national media -JD Woods has been the most dominate of the three in significant spells during WVU's first two games and seems to show up most often when plays break down which means as the competition improves look for him to become even more of a factor.

However, it's not all roses for WVU fans, despitesuch exciting early talk. While I was one of very few supporters of them before the season strated the Moutaineer defense has been deplorable against both the run and the pass and my view of them has become VERY pessimistic. Look for them to let Geno down in his heisman hunt, possibly as soon as the Baylor game.

I have personally witnessed Geno Smith play against my alma mater. Though we won both games at home and played the Mountaineers at Morgantown. Not just myself, but all LSU fans gained great respect for Geno over these two games. If he had a better receiving corps and a little better defense, LSU would have had great trouble winning those games. Geno played hard every down, and never gave up, even in the fourth quarter when his team was being pushed around.

There are some more competitive games ahead for all the candidates, and I would like to see more of the other candidates. I think I know what Geno will do, even with good competition. I would like to see more of the other candidates over the next few weeks.

normtide-I completely agree. Make no mistake....Geno has been incredible these first few weeks, however, it's been against inferior competition.

I have an idea. Let's WAIT until about week 4-6 to:
1. Announce Heisman odds/candidates
2. Announce team rankings

It is a shame that a team like Stanford, who beat USC, is not in Top 5.
