Mono costs Air Force top lineman for a month

Jermaine Robinson AP

Air Force already played without one of its best players on either side of the ball, losing to UNLV Saturday night in a game that served as the Rebels’ first win of the season.

Unfortunately for the service academy, it won’t be the last game said player misses.

Head coach Troy Calhoun confirmed following the loss that offensive lineman Jason Kons will miss a month of play after coming down with mono.  That health issue was what kept the tackle out of the UNLV game.

Kons had started the past 27 games for the Falcons.  Given the fact that Air Force is very much a run-based offense — the rushing game has accounted for 75 percent of the team’s total offense, and they’re the only FBS program that has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season — the loss of an experienced lineman such as Kons is certainly a significant blow.
