Getty ImagesWhat in the name of the Ol’ Ball Coach is going on?
In this morning’s Fifth Quarter, we mentioned that Steve Spurrier seemed to channel his inner Lane Kiffin when, after giving an opening statement following the thumping of Missouri, told the assembled media “I don’t need any questions” and abruptly walked out of the post-game presser.
Less than a day later, it was lather, rinse, repeat for the South Carolina head coach when it comes to dealing with the media. During his regularly-scheduled Sunday teleconference, Spurrier gave some opening remarks and then, well…
The first tweet is from the Charleston Post and Courier’s Darryl Slater, the second from The State’s Josh Kendall.
In a followup tweet, the latter was asked “[w]hat’s got [Spurrier's] panties in a knot?” ”I have no idea,” Kendall wrote. Slater called it “[v]ery odd behavior,” adding that “Spurrier sounded upbeat in his postgame and Sunday opening statements. … Didn’t sound angry.”
We’ve reached out to South Carolina for a comment on Spurrier’s decision to eschew questions from the media on back-to-back days.

Dear JT:
Even for Spurrier, isn’t that a little odd? I don’t remember him doing that before without stating his cause, such as being angry the media wrote something about his team that he disagreed with or something similar. Please post if and when you hear something.
I know southernpatriots family have life long friends who are alums and former players at South Carolina. They are planning a reunion of sorts for the Gamecocks v. LSU Tigers game. I know they try to keep up with Spurrier and team.
I hope all is well with the HBC. This is rather strange
LOL, the ole ball coach is something else. This is very simple to explain.
He doesn’t need any questions. That’s it, lol
I like Spurrier but the guy has always struck me as being a little nuts… The exasperated grin he gets on his face any time something goes wrong in game along with the wringing of his visor never fails to make me laugh.
Last year he had been in somewhat of a pissing match with one of the sports writers for “The State” newspaper, and for a time refused to answer questions if he was present in the room…even at one point moving the presser to another area and telling that particular writer he couldn’t attend. I think his name was Ron Morris.
Whether or not this is related I have no clue, but it sounds like someone has certainly $hit in his mess kit.
As a follow up to the above…I think it involved a story Morris wrote regarding Bruce Ellington…if memory serves correct I think Morris essentially claimed that Spurrier “poached” him from the basketball team…I assume that’s where Ellington’s initial and maybe current scholarship money is coming from?
Maybe Darth Visor is feeling a disruption in the force?????
I know this guy pretty well. He thinks SCar has a chance to make an undefeated run. And they do – until they run into Georgia, Florida, and LSU. Great thing for the old ball coach is that those games are bunched together, and after that the Cocks will get another chance at an ‘undefeated run’. But you can throw the SEC out the window, they’re just looking at the usual shot at beating Clemson and winning a bowl game. Sorry coach, it’s pretty much 2011 again.
Come on Gamecock fans, give it some more thumbs down. cue Journey – Don’t stop believin! Hold onto that feeling!
Come on punks, give it to me. How can anyone question the genius Steve Spurrier?
Never have been able to stomach the guy! I always found him arrogant and smart-mouthed and he’s never done a thing for me to change my mind. The ONLY thing I’ve ever admired about the man is his being married to the same lady for 46 years.
