Holy offense: WVU needs 70 points to beat Baylor

You know the joke “and West Virginia just scored again”? Well, the Mountaineers needed it today.

WVU’s inaugural Big 12 game had all the beautiful points it was promised to have... and then some.

The over/under heading into today’s game was set at 84. That went bye-bye about midway through the third quarter as No. 9 WVU had to outlast -- yes, outlast -- No. 25 Baylor, 70-63. The two teams were knotted up at 35 at the half, with the final touchdown coming with no time left on the clock as Nick Florence completed a wild pass to Lanear Sampson, who then ran the majority of 67 yards for a touchdown.

Smith, rightfully so, is going to get the buzz after today’s game with 656 passing yards and eight touchdowns (both school records). Additionally, he had another day where he threw more touchdowns than incompletions (six). But enough cannot be said about Florence, who had 587 yards of his own through the air, and Bears receiver Terrance Williams, who led all receivers with 314 yards.

Likewise, enough can’t be said about how awful both defenses look. This game featured two of the best receiving units in the Big 12, but please, somebody teach someone how to tackle.

Such is life in the Big 12, apparently. Welcome, WVU. Looks like you’ll fit right in.
