Exactly one week after being removed from USC’s game with Cal and subsequently hospitalized, Brian Baucham is improving but still dealing with issues that sent him to the hospital in the first place.
Citing a person familiar with the situation, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday night that the cornerback was released from the hospital on Wednesday, but continues to experience coughing fits as well as headaches. Baucham was in the intensive care unit and on a ventilator until Monday before he had improved enough to be moved into a standard room at the hospital.
Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, doctors discovered, the Times wrote, “a bleed on the brain and fluid in Baucham’s lungs.”
Several Trojan players had experienced flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to the conference game. From the paper:USC doctors ran tests during the week to determine Baucham’s condition and also gave him fluids, but he still had a fever Friday and Saturday.
Baucham was removed from the Cal game in the second quarter and treated with fluids. He returned in the third quarter for a few plays, but could not continue and was treated again.USC, which is on a bye this weekend, have not addressed Baucham’s status. The defensive back’s availability for the Week 6 game against Utah this coming Thursday is unknown as well.
