Kentucky QB Maxwell Smith out indefinitely

Maxwell Smith AP

More injury problems for Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith. An AC joint injury in his shoulder held Smith out of UK’s loss to Florida two weekends ago, and now a ligament tear in his ankle suffered in a loss to South Carolina will sideline him indefinitely.

Wildcats coach Joker Phillipsstill employed, mind you — made the announcement Monday. “He’s down, obviously,” Phillips said. “He worked his tail off to be in the position to play major-college football.”

With Smith out for the foreseeable future, Phillips said he will go with freshmen Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow at quarterback. Though Whitlow will likely be the starter, Towles, who will have his redshirt burned, should see playing time as well. Whitlow saw extensive playing time against the Gamecocks.

So, no. No Morgan Newton. Against Florida, Newton went 7-of-21 passing for 48 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. UK plays No. 20 Mississippi State this Saturday.

I don’t get why this is even a story. The way Whitlow played against South Carolina, I think Kentucky showed they’re better off losing with him and getting him experience rather then losing with a QB who isn’t the future of the program. The real story is…why does Joker still have a job??

I’ve figured it out; can’t you?

Max was the QB that gave UK the best chance to win NOW. Now he is hurt Towles redshirt is coming off and he and Whitlow are splitting QB duties the rest of the year… Joker has kept his job because he has done things the right way in his time here. But its pretty obvious, gotta show improvement the rest of the year or hes gone… There actually are a lot of talented Fr and So on this team…

Wildcats coach Joker Phillips — “He worked his tail off to be in the position to play major-college football.”

    Maxwell Smith transferred?

More seriously though, I’ve had 5 ankle ligament tears and 4 bone breaks, so I can tell you from experience, he’s very likely done for the year. Obviously it all depends on the severity of the tear, but it’s not likely he’ll return. Each time I did it, I was in a cast for 6 weeks and THEN had to rehab. Modern techniques might shorten his turnaround time, but it’s still a process. Wish him luck. Wondering if he can qualify for a medical redshirt? Not sure of the rules surrounding that. Anyone know?

Smith’s season is over. He’s going to apply for a medical hardship waiver.

Joker Phillips: “You know, had he played game four, applying for a medical hardship would have been out, so I’m a little bit smarter than some of you guys think.” That’s the rest of the quote from above.
