More injury problems for Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith. An AC joint injury in his shoulder held Smith out of UK’s loss to Florida two weekends ago, and now a ligament tear in his ankle suffered in a loss to South Carolina will sideline him indefinitely.
Wildcats coach Joker Phillips — still employed, mind you — made the announcement Monday. “He’s down, obviously,” Phillips said. “He worked his tail off to be in the position to play major-college football.”
With Smith out for the foreseeable future, Phillips said he will go with freshmen Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow at quarterback. Though Whitlow will likely be the starter, Towles, who will have his redshirt burned, should see playing time as well. Whitlow saw extensive playing time against the Gamecocks.
So, no. No Morgan Newton. Against Florida, Newton went 7-of-21 passing for 48 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. UK plays No. 20 Mississippi State this Saturday.
