Huge blow: UGA loses leading receiver to ACL tear

Just a couple of days ahead of one of the biggest games of the young season, Georgia has suffered a significant injury on the offensive side of the ball.

In a release, UGA confirmed that wide receiver Michael Bennett has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2012 season.  The redshirt sophomore suffered the injury toward the end of Thursday’s practice.

Surgery will be performed to repair the damage in his right knee at some point in the future.

Bennett currently leads the Bulldogs in receptions (24), receiving yards (345) and receiving touchdowns, so the loss is a significant blow to UGA’s offense.

No. 5 Georgia will face No. 6 South Carolina in a game pitting the two preseason SEC East favorites.

I actually don’t think this is that big of a loss. They’re fairly deep at receiver and this is still an offense built around the running game. It hurts yes, but not crushing. Now, if they lost Murray for the year, that would be a huge loss.

Hell yeah this is crushing. Bennett was a “go-to” reciever who you could count on to make a clutch catch. Unless someone else stands up to be as consistent as Bennett was, this will hurt UGA. “Calling Mr. Mitchell”

Very bad break for the dawgs..Bennett absolutely was the clutch guy. Our other recievers are capable but Mitchell needs to step up. go dawgs!!

Even as a Gator fan, I hate seeing quality players on other teams go down like this. All this kid probably ever dreamed of was playing SEC football and maybe getting a shot at the NFL. Hopefully the surgery goes well, the rehab stays on track, and he’s back terrorizing our secondary next season. I know injuries are “a part of the game”, but this still sucks for all UGA fans. Fortunately, they have so much skill, they’ll still play great ball. Good luck this weekend against South Carolina, folks. Sure glad that’s one of the primetime games.

Oh boy. Yes, we are deep, but every loss hurts. Bennett was all world in the Tennessee game. I dread making the SC trip without him.

As a SoCar graduate and die hard gamecock fan I truly hate to see any player get hurt (even Dawgs and Tigers). With that being said, dunno how much this is going to hurt you guys. With the two headed running monsters you guys have and all the defensive starters playing, this is still going to be a tremendous battle. I think the Tenn game was fluke for ya’lls defense and they should show up this week. Take away the turnovers in the 2nd qtr and the game would have been much different. They may have been looking past Tenn. to Carolina. Can’t wait for this game to start… Hope the guy heals well.

Man – that really sucks. I hope Bennett rehabs well and comes back at 100%.
