SMU loses starting safety to season-ending injury

SMU’s Iron Skillet loss to TCU this past weekend will prove costly for the Mustangs the rest of the season as well.

Ryan Smith (pictured, No. 20) suffered a right-leg injury in the second quarter of last Saturday’s game. Unfortunately, the injury will cost the starting safety the remainder of the 2012 season.

Smith is the third SMU defensive back to suffer a season-ending injury since the start of summer camp.

Prior to starting every game this season, Smith had started 23 games the past two years, meaning the Mustangs have lost the most experienced member of its injury-depleted secondary unit.

True freshman Shakiel Randolph assumed Smith’s role following the injury, and is expected to get his first collegiate start this weekend against UTEP.
