Arkansas’ leading tackler done for the year with foot injury

Alonzo Highsmith AP

Arkansas finally had some reason to celebrate this season: a 24-7 road win over Auburn. It was the first time the Hogs had been able to notch a win in a month.

But, in keeping with the disastrous narrative that is the 2012 season for Arkansas, the celebration has not come without a price. Coach John L. Smith announced Monday during his press conference that linebacker Alonzo Highsmith is out for the season with a foot injury. Highsmith suffered the injury during the first half against Auburn. He is undergoing surgery today to repair ligament damage.

He becomes the third major contributor to be lost for the season, joining fullbacks Kiero Small and Kody Walker. Several others have missed significant playing time as well with injuries.

Highsmith was Arkansas’ leading tackler this season with 54 — four of which went for a loss – and two sacks. He also had a fumble recovery.

In some better news, cornerback Tevin Mitchel has been cleared to resume practice after dealing with head and gallbladder issues this season.
