Spurrier: Connor Shaw is ‘in all likelihood’ still the starting QB

One of the storylines of Florida’s 44-11 rout of South Carolina on Saturday was the change Steve Spurrier made at quarterback to begin the third quarter. Starter Connor Shaw was an ineffective 9-of-20 for 72 yards and benched at halftime in favor of backup Dylan Thompson. But Thompson, who filled in for Shaw when he was injured earlier this season, didn’t perform much better, going 8-of-20 with an interception.

While neither quarterback played well, Steve Spurrier said Sunday Shaw will likely continue to be the starter for the Gamecocks going forward.

Steve Spurrier: “In all likelihood, Connor (Shaw) will go back to starting. ... Every Gamecock alive knows we need to run the ball.”

Shaw has generally played well this season when healthy, but struggled the past two weeks against two of the the better defenses in the SEC. Looking ahead, South Carolina doesn’t play another good defense the rest of the season. Clemson currently has the best defense of USCe’s remaining opponents in terms of points allowed, but it doesn’t even rank in the top 50.
