Gamecocks issue statement updating Lattimore injury

Earlier Sunday, Steve Spurrier, during his weekly teleconference, acknowledged that running back Marcus Lattimore suffered a dislocated knee in South Carolina’s win over Tennessee Saturday.

The head coach, though, deferred to the team’s medical staff for further explanation as to the extent of the junior’s injuries. Through the school, team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy updated to some degree Lattimore’s situation, with some good news sprinkled in with the bad.

In the release, Guy confirmed that a “hyperextension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments.” What ligaments were involved and the extent of the injuries to the ligaments -- full or partial tears -- were not disclosed.

That’s the bad. The good? The release went on to state that "[t]here were no fractures or additional injuries.” Lattimore remains hospitalized, and will undergo in the near future the first of what’s expected to be multiple rounds of surgical procedures to repair the significant damage the back’s right knee sustained.

“Lattimore is resting comfortably and will continue to be evaluated over the course of the week,” the release read. “Marcus has already begun the process of prehabilitation prior to surgery and to his eventual return to football.”
