Hurricane Sandy causing preparation problems for some teams

First and foremost, to our friends along the East and Northeastern parts of the United States: stay safe. The arrival of Hurricane Sandy up the shore of the Atlantic Ocean is more proof that there are far greater concerns in the world than a football game.

But, as we’ve stated before, this is a football blog and so we blog about football, including when current events become intertwined.

A handful of Division 1 college football programs are already feeling the effects of Sandy on Monday. Rutgers, for example, has canceled team activities today and could do so again on Tuesday.

“We’re stuck in the middle of a hurricane where the university is actually shutdown Monday and Tuesday. There’s a state of emergency so we’ve got a couple different challenges,” said RU coach Kyle Flood. “We’ve canceled all of our activities for the day to keep everybody safe. We thought that was the best thing to do. It’s really not safe for the players to be traveling. But we’re hoping to get back on track sometime tomorrow afternoon if the weather permits. We’ll go from there and start preparing for an Army team that presents unique challenges every year.”

The Scarlet Knights have a bye this week before taking on Army next week.

UConn also could be in trouble preparing for South Florida this weekend. Maryland, Navy, Boston College, Temple and West Virginia are just some of the teams keeping an eye on the weather as they prepare for games.
