Miles on failed fake field goal: ‘I should have kept that one in my hat’

Nick Saban, Les Miles AP

Yes, Les Miles is known as the Mad Hatter, and Miles finally pulled a trick out from underneath that white baseball hat during tonight’s game against top-ranked Alabama.

It just didn’t work; in fact it failed miserably.

Down 7-3 in the second quarter and on a 4th-and-12 from the Alabama 27, Miles decided to fake the field goal. Holder Brad Wing kept the snap and completed  a pass to kicker Drew Alleman… for a loss of two yards and a turnover on downs. Alabama was already in a safe formation and tackled Alleman immediately.

Heading into the locker room down 14-3 at the half, Miles told CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson  “I should have kept that one in my hat.”

Miles also sent Alleman out for a 54-yard field goal, which he missed. The Tigers have been able to move the ball well in spurts, but haven’t been able to do anything with it once inside Alabama territory.

The Tide get the ball to start the second half. While it’d be foolish to count LSU out of anything, Alabama looks like a complete football team. LSU does not.

Can’t wait for Ben to update this one. LSU up 3 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the game. Guess Alabama ain’t quite that “complete” and LSU must be better than “some low level NFL teams.”

  6. kozbee says: Nov 3, 2012 11:30 PM

If LSU wins can this be the death of the BCS..

  7. norcalirish says: Nov 3, 2012 11:36 PM

Les miles is the Michael Bloomberg of college football…always making the wrong decision.

Welcome to actually playing a non-cupcake alabama. You’re lucky the game is this close.

  8. kozbee says: Nov 3, 2012 11:49 PM

    Awesome win Bama..

  9. manchestermiracle says: Nov 3, 2012 11:49 PM

What a disappointment. Twenty eight minutes of great second half play and LSU’s defense falls apart at the end. Just imagine how good ‘Bama might be with a QB that shows up somewhere in the first 58 minutes.

  10. norcalirish says: Nov 3, 2012 11:54 PM

How many points did les miles leave on the field? Lol that guy is a joke.

  11. taintedlombardis says: Nov 3, 2012 11:56 PM

Rolled over. LSU was never going to the dance. Little less than a minute left and you don’t throw downfield once? The mad hatter has nothing going on under said hat.

  12. polegojim says: Nov 3, 2012 11:58 PM

    Oh Yes NorCalIrish… what a joke…

The joke… that almost BEAT #1 Alabama… closer than ANYBODY has been in two years.

Now… in spite of that foolishness…

Wow – Great Game by two powerhouse teams.

  13. southernpatriots says: Nov 4, 2012 12:01 AM

Congratulations to Alabama! They came through when it mattered. Mettenberger played the game of his major college career tonight.

There will likely not be another test for Alabama this strong, so likely they are shoo-ins for another national championship this year.

Kudos to LSU for playing well and giving Alabama all they could handle in the game. For all those predicting LSU’s offense would not score and even my skepticism, Mettenberger was able to connect on numerous throws and if 3 passes into the hands of receivers had been caught….

  14. dcroz says: Nov 4, 2012 12:06 AM

Hats off to LSU for a fantastic game. I have not seen anyone dominate us for any stretch of time like that since Auburn did in the second half of the 2010 Iron Bowl. I still cannot believe that final possession; I’ve seen it replayed several times now and still feel like I dreamed it, because we had a huge fork sticking out of us at the time. It’s been a year since we’ve had a game like that, and I can hardly wait until we do it again next year!

And for all of you out there who were bitching about how “boring” the two ‘Bama-LSU games were last year: did THIS one properly entertain you?

  15. normtide says: Nov 4, 2012 12:06 AM

Great game by LSU. They were fired up and prepared. Can’t say enough about them. This rivalry has to be the hottest in the game. Bama found a way, that last drive will become legend.

  16. badgerbuck says: Nov 4, 2012 12:08 AM

    Alabama 2012 national champ!! Congrats

  17. rtfox says: Nov 4, 2012 12:08 AM

Bottom line. Alabama beat lsu in death valley, on Saturday night, prime time. Lsu fans be gracious about it, stop making excuses, stop the trash talk, there is nothing else to say. It’s done and over.

  18. Deb says: Nov 4, 2012 12:15 AM

Congratulations to LSU for a hard-fought game. I’ve been championing Mettenberger for a while, and tonight he demonstrated how much potential he has. The Tiger defense played an excellent game as well. When it comes to LSU, I tend to focus so much attention on Eric Reid that I overlook everyone else. He is to me like Joe Lefors was to Butch in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”–the scariest guy in the posse. But the whole squad did an amazing job.

I don’t agree that Bama is a lock for the title. This was the Tide’s first big test, and they struggled for much of the game. McCarron did what many great QBs do–he pulled it out in the end. But I’d have preferred to see consistent play throughout the game.

  19. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Nov 4, 2012 12:17 AM

Before I read anyone’s comment, let me first congrats Bama for the win tonight.., this one is going to hurt awhile.
… But I have to say I was very please with the way LSU played tonight, if they would’ve won, Zach would have definitely been the MVP of the game he showed up huge tonight. Makes me look forward and happy to next year.
    Geaux Tigers!!!

  20. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Nov 4, 2012 12:22 AM

    Who’s bitching but you?

  21. Walk says: Nov 4, 2012 12:25 AM

As far as cupcakes go off the top of my head bama has played the number 8 team to start the year then i believe arkansas was number 2 before bama ended their hopes by injuring their qb. Great game by lsu. I believe lsu played better but made a couple of bad decisions which cost them the game. Mettenberger got hot, that was fun to watch, if he can keep that up lsu is going to be a great team to watch. As much as i blame the loss here on a few key plays earlier in the game i gotta give les miles the credit for taking the full advantage of the bye week. I am glad bama won but that was a really great game from lsu. The tigers and their fans have nothing to be ashamed of here. That last score was mccarron, who is an experienced qb, not panicking and managing that last drive. Reading the d and dropping that ball off to yeldon sealed it.

  22. rtfox says: Nov 4, 2012 12:53 AM

Hey thecrazyasianseccountry. First of all I wasnt bitching, I was making a statement, second I think you were bitching when your son texted your wife from college. You know as well as the rest of us that lsu fans have been trash talking, insulting bama fans leading up to this game. Like I said, I have no reason to bitch, I am more than happy with the outcome of the game!!!!

  23. barbeaux says: Nov 4, 2012 12:56 AM

@walk….Michigan and Arkansas are not very good teams at all this year despite their preseason rankings. This was Alabama’s first big test. The next will be A&M

  24. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Nov 4, 2012 1:03 AM

So what you’re saying is I can get upset over a lose and be gracious at the same time? What exactly are you saying?

  25. suprmous says: Nov 4, 2012 1:04 AM

Southernpatriots, good to see you again and I’m still tryin 😉

I felt like squirmin all thru the game on those penalties and 3 and outs for sure but Zach stayed calm for both of us it seemed. I’ve to admit that I was quite surprised at how the plan was carried thru up till the last second. Gotta hand it to the Mad Hatter, he definitely had “a few” up his sleeve and under his hat. Good thing the season’s bout to come to an end cause I don’t think I could take much more bitin of the fingernails.

To you others who’ve been nice to me, thank you. And till when our paths cross again de mous is outta here. Have a good wk all you good people.

  26. txnative61 says: Nov 4, 2012 1:07 AM

Hate to see Les Miles get badmouthed and second guessed after a great game like that. He is also responsible for their leading by 3 toward the end, to my great surprise. Great game, but Bama shouldn’t put the A&M game in their pocket just yet, methinks.

  27. dg0122 says: Nov 4, 2012 1:09 AM

Mo Isom had a better chance of making that kick or getting that first down

  28. imaduffer says: Nov 4, 2012 1:16 AM

A&M will kick the Tides ass.

  29. Walk says: Nov 4, 2012 1:36 AM

Generally i agree with you but..

Arkansas fell apart after their qb suffered a blow they did not want to call a concussion in the ‘bama game. Arkansas defense is/was subpar, but that is just ny opinion their offense i believe was why they were ranked so high. Even with hindsight it is tough to say how they would have done without that “concussion” but they were ranked very high. Michigan is about in the same boat with a qb able to scramble and make plays but bama handled that game very well. Arguing that a team in the top ten or so has an easy schedule though is low hanging fruit. Very few teams ranked as high as bama is will run into a team or teams better so it is very tough to get a challenge like lsu provided . Amazing game, again my hat is off to lsu. The Tigers future is bright keep on teaching, learning, and recruiting lsu is going to be a big part of the college inagural postseason in the next few years. If i have angered you i truly apologise and if am wrong on a point please correct me or show me another side, it was nice to meet you barbeaux (so to speak).

  30. barbeaux says: Nov 4, 2012 1:40 AM

@wake Arkanas fell apart when Petrine had the motorcycle wreck. Don’t forget that they lost to Louisiana-Monroe before they played Alabama haha. Michigan’s been shaky against a lot of low caliber teams. They’re cupcakes this year.

  31. dg0122 says: Nov 4, 2012 1:40 AM

@imaduffer— yeah lsu beat aggy at aggy and bama beat lsu at lsu so that makes perfect sense…and Leslie’s stupidity kept aggy in the game and was the only reason bama won, and he wont be involved in bama v aggy…

  32. rtfox says: Nov 4, 2012 2:06 AM

What I’m saying crazyasian, is that leading up to this game it was nothing but trash talk coming from lsu, and now that they lost, it’s lollypops and gum drops, like no one was trash talking or insulting bama or their fans and everyone is bff’s.

  33. mdac1012 says: Nov 4, 2012 2:24 AM

This game shows just what a great recruiter Les Miles is, because nobody who is this bad at in game management and decision making could win as much as he does, unless he had great players.

OK let’s rewind from last years 9 to 6 LSU win!

Bama fans: oh we dominated the game just look at the stats and you can see we are the better team.

Yes you gave us a country butt whipping in the NC last year.

Bama Fans who dominated the game this year ? who was clearly the better team? Come on be honest and don’t just be a homer!

Good Luck Bama I am now pulling for you to keep the SEC streak going! But be ready for the Aggie’s as that will be a tougher game than you will expect.

  37. barbeaux says: Nov 4, 2012 12:35 PM

The question must be asked…will LSU get a rematch in the BCS championship? Last year, much of the justification in many peoples’ minds for putting Bama in the championship was because they gave the #1 team the hardest challenge all year.

  38. vamsalmar1967 says: Nov 4, 2012 12:43 PM

This season isn’t in the bag yet. After that heart-stopper last night, we have to face Texas A&M, and they’re tough. If we lose to them, we’ll drop in the BCS rankings, even though we’ll probably get to play in the SEC championship (one victory needed for that).

Keep cheering the Tide on! They’re going to need it!

Had another undefeated been left standing, Alabama would not have gotten that title shot. The only reason the Tide made the game is because the other one-loss contenders had fallen to unranked teams or had lost by larger margins.

But to me, Bama/LSU are the most exciting teams in football to watch. If fate gave us another title rematch, I’d be all for it.

  40. vamsalmar1967 says: Nov 4, 2012 6:06 PM

It isn’t going to happen, my friend, unless some really weird things happen between now and the end of the season.

Personally, I think LSU is really good. But, they have two losses now, and there are still at least 4 undefeated teams. LSU dropped to #9 in the AP rankings (I don’t have the other polls), and I don’t think they can climb high enough with three weeks to go to play for the championship. But, who knows? Crazier things have happened.

Last year, LSU and Alabama entered the regular-season game undefeated, as #1 and #2. LSU won in overtime. That gave Bama one loss – to the #1 team in overtime. The only other team that could have gone to the championship game was OK State. But, they lost in overtime to an unranked team (Iowa State) . I think that’s what made the difference.

    It’s totally different this year.

He isn’t called “the mad hatter” for nothing. Seems every trick play he tried last night failed. If the kid hadn’t touched the ball at the 9 1/2 yard line, I still don’t think that one would have worked because I think a Bama player would have gotten the ball. The kid that kicked the ball just didn’t kick it far enough.

  42. alligatorsnapper says: Nov 4, 2012 6:14 PM

Miles did not change the defense on the last defensive series, Chavis did. The defense Chavis had instituted was working fine for the previous 5 possessions and yet he went into prevent defense which apparently one player did not fully understand since he missed his assignment completely. Keep the same defense that worked the previous 5 times and probably win. Change the successful defense to this prevent mess and stay 10 to 15 yards behind the receivers and leave it open to be picked apart, which is what happened. Give Chavis an A to the last series and an F on the last series. That was sad. Miles is a great coach. Chavis is a great coach. When will they learn?

  43. allmonc says: Nov 4, 2012 6:36 PM

LSU played their best game that I have seen in 2 years, and was clearly the best team, partly because Alabama’s QB what’s-his-name was not playing well – no doubt due in large part to the fierce LSU defense. At the end of the game when Ala. moved decisively down the field to score and win (on the scoreboard only, by the slimest of margins), leaving only 51 sec. for LSU to reply – a stroke of blind luck for Ala. as fate would have it -Something happened to the LSU defense that temporarily blinded them from noticing and hence preventing the 3-times repeated and consecutive 10-12 yd. grade-school passes to the right sideline at the same exact spot from the line . If the coaches had been sharp and professional enough, they would have seen this pattern and done something to stop it easily enough. I guess they were all just helpless, dumbfounded spectators to the Ala. ‘miracle drive’ unfolding before their eyes.
But this doesn’t change the fact that LSU overall outplayed the Great and Mighty alabama. Alabama should be very grateful that they escaped with their ‘life’, so to speak.
And Texas A&M is highly overrated, Ala. will crush them. Don’t even try to compare them to LSU in any way. They ran away from the Big 12.

  44. materialman80 says: Nov 5, 2012 4:09 PM

What a great game! I finally saw the LSU team I have waited for all year! The Tigers played like Tigers and came up a bit short. Nick Saban showed a lot of class saying LSU outplayed them most of the game. All you can do is go out there and play your heart out and both teams certainly did that. That’s SEC Football!
