Substituting “T” for “little” would have helped a friend of mine named Richard when he was growing up. His father was called “Dick.” My friend was called “Dickey” until he was about 12 and then called “Dick.” When his voiced changed and friends would call on the phone his family thought it was hysterical to ask if the caller wanted to talk to “Big Dick” or “Little Dick.”

This is the South. Why would you call Dick Jr. “Richard” when you could call him “Little Dick”? Come on, now. Don’t you remember that episode of Andy Griffith where Andy had to explain to Opie about Plain Claude Beamon, who was so called because he didn’t have a “Jr.” or “Sr.” on his name? They could have just called him Claude … but no … he was “Plain Claude.”

Interesting info on the “T-Bob.” Had never heard any of that before. It’s much cooler than just saying “Little Bob” as they do in the rest of the South.

Think of the prefix “T-” as “Little”, to distinguish him from his father or uncle.

I lived in the Baton Rouge area for forty some odd years and never heard it applied to a female., tho. Just about every Cajun has a nickname of some sort, some times very colorful.

All the neighbors who came to our home to watch the game to forget for a few hours the mess they are working int to get back into their homes after the flooding and wind damage of Hurricane Isaac are obviously suffering on “what could have been, what should have been”, etc. LSU did enough things–”high school type” penalties, bad calls by Coach Miles, dropped passes in the hands of receivers (3 I remember) and of course Alabama did enough things to win themselves without any help from LSU.

brewcrewfan54: It is not a Southern tradition but rather a Cajun one. T-Bob or T-Mike is short for “Petite Bob” or “Petite Mike” a nickname they received since they are named after their father and they received the “Petite” description, rather than Junior.
