Notre Dame, Oregon flip in latest BCS standings

If you’re not used to it by now, get used to it. Until someone topples No. 1 Alabama, college football is going to be the Tide’s world with everyone else playing in it.

As of the end of Week 10 in the 2012 season, there are three other undefeated football teams playing for the chance for a spot in the BCS championship game.

The Tide, as we’ve mentioned, remained No. 1 and now has the highest-rated computer average to go along with it. Kansas State stays at No. 2, but Oregon has leapfrogged Notre Dame to reclaim the No. 3 spot after a shootout win against USC while the Irish struggled to hold off Pitt in overtime.

This is the fate for Notre Dame if all things ahead of them stay as is. While there’s no disputing the quality wins against Oklahoma and Stanford, Notre Dame’s computer average slipped to No. 2 this week and the Irish have the weakest remaining schedule (Boston College, Wake Forest, USC) among the four unbeaten teams vying for a BCS championship spot. We’ve said it before, but it warrants repeating one more time: Notre Dame needs help to move up the BCS standings from here on out.

Likewise, Oregon still has some ground to cover to catch K-State in the overall computer rankings. However, the Ducks are the clear No. 2 among voters and have a strong final stretch of games (Cal, Stanford and Oregon State) that could give them a boost to jump up one more spot before the season is done. Certainly, the battle between K-State and Oregon in the BCS standings to end the year will be one of the most fascinating to watch.

The SEC has three teams at spots five through eight with Georgia, Florida, LSU and South Carolina. Big East representative Louisville, also undefeated but unlikely to get to the BCS championship, comes in at No. 9 and Florida State rounds out the top 10.
