Losses come in pairs for Boise State, apparently. In addition to losing Saturday’s game to San Diego State, all but officially ending the Broncos’ quest to get back to a BCS bowl in the process, Boise State nose tackle Mike Atkinson was lost to injury. Turns out, it’s for the year.
Chris Petersen said Monday that Atkinson, a senior starter, has a torn ACL and will miss the final three regular season games of the year plus the Broncos’ bowl game. Atkinson was sixth on the team with 37 tackles. He also had two forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown.
“He’s one of those guys — he’s been through some hard things, he’s grown a lot, he’s figured some things out and he’s playing some really good football, the best of his career,” Petersen said. “It’s another bump in the road. That’s how he has to approach it.”
With Atkinson’s season and career with Boise over, Greg Grimes, Darren Koontz and Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe could all see more playing time.
