Terps lose another player to season-ending injury

And, no, it isn’t another quarterback.

Instead, and just as unfortunately, Maryland is dealing with the loss of arguably its best player on the defensive side of the ball.

The Terps announced Monday that starting middle linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. The senior suffered the injury in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss to Georgia Tech.

This is another tough loss for the program,” head coach Randy Edsall said. “Demetrius is a captain and has been a leader of this defense both on and off the field. I feel terrible for him because I know how much the game means to him. To have his senior year cut short is just disheartening.

“We will be here to support him through the rehab process and help him with his transition towards the next stage of his career.”

Hartsfield has started all nine games this season and leads the Terps in tackles with 108. He’s also second on the team in tackles for loss with seven.

All told, the Terps have lost five players to season-ending ACL tears this year, including three starting quarterbacks. A fourth starting QB was lost to a season-ending foot injury, leaving the Terps with a converted linebacker under center for the remainder of the season.
