Now that he’s had 24 hours to cool down from his rant against an internet ‘scumbag’ impersonating one of his players on Twitter earlier this week, UCLA coach Jim Mora has admitted that his words were a bit harsh.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Mora conceded that he was overreacting when he said someone posing as freshman safety Randall Goforth on Twitter solely to stir the proverbial pot with USC receiver Robert Woods needed to be placed behind bars.
“Bring his ass out here,” Mora said yesterday. “He won’t make it very far with this team. He’s a coward. That’s what a coward does. I challenge that guy to come out here, whoever he is. He won’t. The guy’s a coward. Or girl, whoever it is.”
Mora was calmer today.
“Obviously, I overreacted,” Mora said. “Obviously I don’t want the guy in jail. It made good headlines, I guess. I looked at it and go ‘you’re just an idiot’ but I’m good for something stupid said every once in a while, as we all know.”
It wasn’t that Mora’s point was off-base — in fact, he was spot on — but when your most notorious verbal attacks are directed toward athletic department staff and some low-life behind a computer (not that I know anything about that), then yeah, ya might have to dial it back a bit.
To Mora’s credit, he admitted as much.
