Cal’s backup QB will ‘most likely’ start against No.2 Oregon

Cal quarterback Zach Maynard had to be carted from the field during last Friday’s loss to Washington after it appeared he injured his knee late in the game. Word on Maynard’s injury has been quiet since, but it’s been bad enough to have his status for this weekend’s game against Oregon questioned.

Maynard had to be taken from the practice field Tuesday again with a brace immobilizing his left knee. An MRI did not reveal any ligament damage, but when asked if his QB would be ready to go against the second-ranked Ducks, Bears coach Jeff Tedford said “I have no idea.

Thursday was a bit more definitive. Tedford said that junior Allan Bridgford will “most likely” get the start against the Ducks.

“He has not practiced,” Tedford said of Maynard. “He’s gotten better each and every day, but we don’t want to irritate it. Most likely if he’s ready to play (Saturday), he’ll be there for a backup-type of role. Most likely Bridgford will start.”

Bridgeford has completed just 25 percent of his passes for 32 yards in limited playing this season.
