Notre Dame moves past Boston College

Not one for aesthetically pleasing football this season, Notre Dame did what it needed to do (i.e. win) against a Boston College team that will likely be looking for a new coach after this season.

The No. 4 Irish beat the Eagles 21-6 and took one step closer to finishing the season undefeated. Quarterback Everett Golson threw for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Tommy Rees only came in for a snap when Golson’s helmet came off during a tackle.

With top-ranked Alabama falling earlier today to Texas A&M, Notre Dame becomes one of only three unbeaten teams to be in a position to play for a BCS championship, along with Oregon and Kansas State. The Wildcats took care of TCU earlier and Oregon currently leads Cal in a closer-than-expected first half, 14-10.

Notre Dame’s remaining schedule features a home game against Wake Forest and a season-ending trip to USC. The Trojans can actually play spoiler for both the Irish and the Ducks if USC and Oregon meet in the Pac-12 championship like many expect. There’s no question USC can score with the Ducks, and if the defense is able to make some stops, the upset potential is more than reasonable.

If you’re Notre Dame, it’s crucial that you win your remaining games and keep your fingers crossed for either K-State or Oregon to slip up at some point in the remaining weeks. Never did I -- or anyone, probably -- think that an undefeated Notre Dame could be left out of a BCS championship game, but that’s what’s at stake.
