Burkhead’s return to Huskers? ‘Oh man it’s hard to tell’

As Nebraska looks to take a step closer to clinching its first-ever Big Ten legends division title, the Cornhuskers could once again be without the services of one of its top running backs.

Rex Burkhead sprained an MCL in the season opener and has missed five games since, including each of the last three. When asked after practice Monday about Burkhead’s availability for this weekend’s game against Minnesota, offensive coordinator Tim Beck was non-committal.

“Oh man it is hard to tell,” Beck said in comments distributed by the school. “A lot is going to depend on how Rex (Burkhead) feels and what he can give us. Whatever that is and whenever that is we will be ready. We will welcome him back for sure.”

Burkhead has rushed for 405 yards and three touchdowns in four games and part of another one in which he aggravated the injury.

If Burkhead is again unable to go, the bulk of the running game load would fall to Ameer Abdullah, who leads the team with 942 yards and is tied for tops in rushing touchdowns with eight.
