‘Technical glitch’ temporarily removes PSU from NCAA merchandise store

NCAA president Mark Emmert said this summer after levying severe sanctions against Penn State that the school perpetuated “a ‘football first’ culture that ultimately enabled [former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky's] serial child sexual abuse to occur.”

Despite that statement, the NCAA’s online merchandise shop did not recognize Penn State and its “football first culture” as a one of the Top 100 teams in college athletics when it comes to sales today — even though Penn State is one of the top athletic departments in the country in terms of revenue.

In fact, Penn State wasn’t even listed on the “All Teams” portion of the online shop. Coincidence? Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror made some phone calls to the website and was given two different answers; whether or not you care to believe them is your decision to make. Here’s the site’s response to the inquiry:

As of today, the NCAA has taken all the Penn State merchandise off our website, so until we’re further updated … we don’t know what’s happening. They won’t let exactly us know why. But it is off the site,” a customer service representative said at about 10:45 a.m.

A few minutes later, Meier Ravich, vice president of communications for the website’s owner, Fanatics Retail Group, explained why the Penn State merchandise was not available.

“It’s a technical glitch that’s preventing the Penn State merchandise from appearing on the site,” he said. “They’re working to get it back up. It should be up very shortly.”

Ravich couldn’t give an exact time for when the Penn State merchandise would be available but noted, “it should be up soon.”

As a certain consulting duo from “Office Space” would say, “We’ve fixed the glitch.”

(Actually, the “glitch” has been fixed; the Penn State page is back up)

So the NCAA doesn’t want the PSU money?

As for the revenue at the school their model is pretty simple, football makes all the money and Basketball season doesn’t exist in State College for some reason.

A temporary glitch. Of course, it only became a glitch after they started getting so many calls. At first customer service was telling people that the NCAA told them to take it down.

There’s a logical explanation for this. The NCAA Store had to remove PSU from their site because the new line of “Penn State Pedobears” merchandise hadn’t yet arrived at their warehouse. You can’t sell something you don’t have.

I thought inconsonance’s first comment was pretty funny actually. A few questions for incon. Though: 1. dood, we all have typos. Many of us post from our itty bity little smart phones with touch screen keyboards, so give us typo-lamo’s a break, k? And yes that is a question. Second: what in THEE hell does your login name even mean?! Is it a word in the dictionary that I am just not familiar with? Is it a reference to being incontinent? or a reference to being inconsolable? Or a reference is it like a new grammatical style that is mak-a-word-with-known-parts-of-words? Like: in=not, never, negative; con=with; sona=sound; ance=a human characteristic of or petrtaining to the word preceding it, i.e.: endurance, impertinence, preference, perseverance. Which put together would mean someone who typifies one who does not hear others…? So maybe your putting yourself down? Or maybe it means not consonance? Which mean a vowel? Are you a vowel incon.?

Smokingto: I’m totally baffled by your comment. You seem to be insensitivley putting incon. down for his insensitively putting PSU down…? Your comment was funny too though. I laughed. :) . Honestly though, am I misunderstanding the situ, here? Didn’t PSU further enable and excacerbate the situation with Sandusky?

On another note, I think it is totally sad that they tore down the joe paterno statue. It’s not like what he did wasn’t awesome and great, as a leader and coach with his team. People seem in general not to be able to separate others good actions from their bad; we’re kidding ourselves when we speak cruelly to our loved ones and then gently to our coworkers and then think badly of others because they did something “so much worse.” Paterno did not pursue enabling the abuse of players or staff or whomever. That was not his goal. Not being privy to the details, I assume that he was still very culpable. But people loved him for a reason, and that reason is still true. Anyway, I’m going on WAY too long here.
