UGA LB hit with drunk-driving charge

A backup member of SEC East champions Georgia has found himself on the wrong side of a sobriety test, the school’s student newspaper is reporting.

According to The Red & Black, linebacker Carlton Stagg was arrested a week ago today and charged with driving under the influence. As Stagg is 18 years old, he was also charged by university police with underage consumption.

Stagg was pulled over late on the night of Nov. 8 for speeding in a 25 mph zone. The arresting officer noted the player’s “eyes were glassy in appearance” and subsequently submitted to both a field sobriety test and breathalyzer after insisting he hadn’t been drinking.

In two attempts at a breathalyzer, Stagg blew a .061 and .062. Because of his age, that triggered the DUI charge.

There has been no comment from UGA on any future punishment for Stagg.
