Getty ImagesTexas A&M went from doing nothing to promote freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel for the Heisman to trying just about everything possible, including extra points because why not extra points? They’re points!
As it turns out, though, there are some things Manziel simply cannot do. Making kicks is one of them (his footwork was a mess, if we’re being honest here). He may be a Heisman candidate, but Manziel is not, in fact, a cyborg.
Manziel still had a great game (367 total yards, five total touchdowns) as No. 9 Texas A&M beat Sam Houston State 47-28.
I love Kevin Sumlin and Johnny Football, but why on Earth is he attempting an extra point? It serves no purpose, and while it’s highly unlikely, you still risk possible injury to your best player. He shouldn’t be on the field any more than is necessary.
WTH? I read the headline and just assumed it referred to a botched two point conversion attempt. Why is he kicking? A&M trying to pad his Heisman chances by showing how versatile he is? If so, e just failed miserably. Makes him look like a pompous jackass who’s convinced himself (wrongly) that he can do everything.
I don’t have a problem with it, up by 40 and he has been making them in practice while the regular kicker has not.
SEC played a tough as nails schedule this week. It’s no wonder they’re so good! Ess See See speeeeeeeeeeed!
Sorry, beating up on an FCS school is just padding your stats…..
@manchestermiracle
He was pulled early in the third quarter…
Awesome to let him try this. I suspect Sumlins teams play well for him because he lets them enjoy the game.

Yeah, but to do it when you are up by 40 just seems like rubbing it in. I am sure the casual fan would know nothing about the regular kicker having problems in practice. If you want to try some stunt, do it when the score is 6-0 and the game is (in theory) still in question.
This coming from an SEC fan.
Maybe they were trying to set a precedent of him making a kick so that at some point in a later game they could use that same setup in order to attempt a 2 point conversion?
Coming into this game, Taylor Bertolet had missed 5 PATs on the year. He missed another one on the 3rd TD today. Johnny Football threw a 42 yd laser to EZ that went for an 89 yd TD on the first play of the second half, to put the score at 40-0. He missed the PAT, and never played another down today. It was a fun day, I’m sunburned, and I have tailgated well.
IMO the next Heisman winner.

It doesn’t matter if he was pulled in the first quarter, FBS teams that schedule FCS teams shouldn’t even get to count the win in their record, let alone statistics. Then again, A&M is just doing what SEC schools do….
With K State losing badly, Johnny Football is now squarely in the Heisman trophy race and IMO in the lead.
11 weeks, no bye God forbid Sumlin let’s the players have any fun.
You havent seen A&Ms kicker, freshman with mental issues of late…and school didn’t have much choice in scheduling this year with SEC move.
Still a lot of season to go, but he is my Hesiman front runner.
FBS teams ALL over the country schedule FCS teams. Most of them do it early in the year when no one is looking though.
As far as his extra point try… should have done the dropkick! Those are awesome!
Johnny Football for Heisman! #2 in total offense, #3 in points accounted for, 1st freshman to go 3000+pass yds and 1000+ rush yds. 38 TDs
