Nobody will be leaving the Big 12. Each institution has signed over their first and second tier broadcast rights for a six year period to the conference to insure stability. No university can afford to leave until that deal expires.

Well pastabelly, if Maryland was the only team that left you would be right. The problem is that they will be the first domino. The ACC can’t handle 3 or 4 teams leaving, and that is on the horizon now.

Says the guy too big of a coward to join the B1G. Let’s not make this about you since somebody else is actually about to pull the trigger.

(1.) I’m an Alabama grad.

(2.) Texas solicited the B1G to join after the National Championship game against us. The B1G Chancellors and Presidents know ALL about Texas. They told Texas “Thanks, but no thanks!” (Think University speak when officials say “We had good talks and discussions, but the B1G is fine as it is.”

(3.) IF Texas is sooooooooooo attractive as they think they are, Why did the B1G look @ a University who has cut sports and another mid major? The reason, Texas brings nothing but headaches to the table. Texas is about TOTAL CONTROL, from athletics to research to administration. Texas has to control everything.

(4.) Ask Arkansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M how Texas operates. Texas is a parasite looking for the next host.

(5.) When rebuffed by the B1G, Texas makes a bee line to the PAC-12. The PAC-12 saw Texas for what they are. The PAC-12 saw that Texas wanted to piggy back on their regional network for the LHN. It was all about Texas. When asked to subordinate the LHN to PAC-12 guidelines and supervision, UT University President said that it was Deloss Dodds decision, not his. There has been no contact since.

and finally,

(6.) Texas seeks admission to the ACC. When Texas is politely rebuffed, Texas tries to recruit Florida State and Clemson to the big 12. With WVU and TCU bringing the big 12 to ten teams, Texas has a “boutique” conference with two power teams, Texas and Oklahoma, and eight teams that are just along for the ride. Think the Old SWC with two more teams.

You don’t want Texas in your conference. They are not worth it.

ACC is fine. You have to look at the entire athletic programs. ACC basketball is a beast as is B1G.

The conference in trouble is the big 12. With money being spent like drunken sailors (sorry sailors), and the ACC, B1G, and the SEC already @ 14 teams, there are limited slots available for another super conference. The PAC-12 has the TV markets. The big 12 doesn’t. There aren’t 6 quality athletic programs to go into the big 12 and make the sport executives in NYC sit up and take notice.

I wonder what will happen to the big 12 should the SEC extend formal invitations to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to round out the first super conference? PAC 12 takes BYU, both Kansas schools and Iowa State? Think TV markets. big 12 is DMW. WVa and UConn to the ACC. Four super conferences of 64 teams.

UT has it’s own network and is sitting on the sidelines looking in. Couldn’t happen to a better school

Your thinking is right on the money, except Cincinnati and Louisville are not in the mix for the BIG10. They probably want UVA, UNC, and GT in that order. Which of course means they’ll now go into wait mode and see what shakes loose. And don’t forget that if ND came knocking they would jump at the chance to add them.

The BIG12 should be next up, they have 6 spots to fill. On their list is FSU, Clemson, GT, VT, Louisville, and possibly Miami.

The SEC is simply trying to get the best university in they can in Virginia (UVA or VT) and the best from North Carolina (UNC or NCST).

you have to wonder if the big 12 is somehow making under the counter efforts at four of the acc teams they like in Florida St, Miami, Clemson and Ga Tech?

as we know, if pundits will spend $2B on the presidential election, gathering up $50M will be nothing for big alumni to spend if they want change…

I actually like Maryland, since I have family who live in Annapolis. I just don’t see them leaving as a seismic shock that will influence Notre Dame’s thought process.

I always pull for Maryland in ACC basketball. And other than 2002, I always pull my hair out. And 2001 was really, really awful.

I hope they stay put. I think they should.

As far as Rutgers… the Big East is DOA.

Im not a maryland fan, but just looking on the outside and reading some acc blogs, the university of Maryland is pretty much in the position that the former big 12 evacuees texas a&m, mizzou, colorado and nebraska found themselves in..

they have no say so in a conference that is dominated by North Carolina and Duke, with all of the important decisions coming out of Greensboro (ACC headquarters) and they are looking to improve their financial bottom line and secure a better national footprint.

Maryland, along with Florida st, were the only ACC schools to vote against the $50 million buyout. Im sure Miami and Clemson wanted to go along, but probably got punked at the last minute by other conference presidents…

if Maryland does leave, which we will found out tomorrow, they will leave a hell of a legacy and will leave the best basketball conference in America….they will probably never have another game vs UNC, Duke, UVA, NCstate or anyone else unless its in the tournament….their womens bball team has been doing great the last few years, and both men and women won national titles in the last decade.

as for football, they have to keep their good players home…look how many Maryland players leave the state to play at VaTech or FSU or even down in the SEC….that starts with winning first…

Rutgers will be brought along for potential television eyes only..their athlethic program is not spectacular at all, even though they are tied for big east lead right now and ranked in top 25

Lacrosse doesn’t count, but even if it did, it’s not important so it all evens out anyway.
