Huskers clinch Legends division, spot in B1G title game vs. Badgers

P.J. Smith AP

Back in late September, Nebraska took care of some late-game business against Wisconsin, turning a 17-point second-half deficit into a 30-27 win.

Next weekend, the Badgers will officially be in position to exact some revenge.

After trailing for nearly 42 minutes against the hapless Hawkeyes, a Rex Burkhead touchdown run late in the third quarter was all the No. 17 Cornhuskers would need as they came away with an ugly 13-7 win at Kinnick Stadium.  Ugly or not, it clinched the first-ever Legends division title for NU in its second season in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin, which clinched the Leaders division two weeks ago thanks to NCAA sanctions on Ohio State and Penn State, and Nebraska will now square off in the Big  Ten championship game in Indianapolis next weekend.  It will mark the Badgers’ second consecutive appearance in the Big Ten title game.

The Huskers’ win also officially eliminated Michigan from contention in the Legends.  Entering The Game with the Buckeyes Saturday, the Wolverines needed both a win over tOSU and a loss by Nebraska to clinch their first berth in the conference title game.

Great to see Rex Burkhead back. He could be the face of BIG 10 Football.
He should have a good NFL career.

Not a Nebraska fan in the least. Having said that I hope the Huskers beat the holy dog sh*t out of the second place (first loser) team the Leaders Division is sending to Indy… otherwise known as Wisconsin.

Good to be back in a title game, since 1999, les see along that way, Frank Solich was fired during a 9 win season, Nebraska hired Bill Callahan who tried to kill off the walk on program and take us to our first losing season since 1961 and five years of sadness for Husker fans. Bo Pelini has rebuilt the walk on program with Tom Osbourne so nice to finally have a great year with some rough spots and a slow start.Congratulations to the Husker team and good luck in Indy,

I hope that Michigan beats Ohio State. That will keep the OSU fans from making claims about being the best in the country and being cheated out of the BCS crown by sanctions.

They should put an asterisk on this season’s championship since the 2 best teams in the B1G won’t even be playing.

That being said, Huskers by 21

Thank god Michigan didn’t get in…they don’t need the ego boost

Had those schools not violated the rules, then they could be there. Cheaters don’t get an asterix in their favor.

Nebraska beat Penn State as it is. So 1 of the best 2 IS in the title game. Clearly Ohio State is the best, buuuuuut that whole “caught cheating” thing. Pesky rules.

Ohio State is NOT the true champion of anything. THEY CHEATED. Let them deal with the punishment.

USC were cheaters and PLENTY of Buckeye fans were all over them. So NO remorse now when they are made out to be hypocritical cheaters.

Either way. Wisconsin should enjoy last trip to title game. Ohio st will take over. Huskers the same. I hope forklift is ready for hoke after thanksgiving . Dude is a slob

    @bender4700

There is no such word as “asterix”… pesky grammar rules.

  10. jamesfield74 says: Nov 23, 2012 8:03 PM

    bender,
OSU cheated whom? There were violations involving tattoos, no cheating.

OSU is far from a finished product but it is BY FAR the beat team in the Big Ten.

“Ohio State is NOT the true champion of anything”

    10/6/2012….63-38.

They were true champions that night. Running all over the Blackshirts type of champions.

    Go Bucks.

Congrats to Nebraska and their fans, but they need to put a HUGE ASTERISK next to this Big 10 Championship because the best team is not playing in it: Ohio State. I guess Wisconsin, with their 4-3 conference and 7-4 overall record will play in the championship game instead of Ohio State 11-0 or Penn State 5-2 in the conference and 7-4 overall, which have better records. There needs to be a better way of penalizing these teams. None of the players on OSU’s current team committed the violations and they are paying the price: A spot in the National Championship Game. OSU is much better than number one Notre Dame. Put a big asterisk next to the NCG as well. Penn State players are paying the price for something they weren’t involved in either. It isn’t right. The universities should penalize them in monetary ways. Don’t punish innocent players. The whole thing sucks.

  13. alan3008 says: Nov 24, 2012 3:06 AM

Bunch of LOSERS on here that can’t handle the fact that the best team in the country is not playing in the post season. Suck it.

Ohio State is number one! Best in the Big 10 and far better than Notre Dame.

yea I am so excited about watching probably the most boring Big Ten championship that will ever happen. . it is no wonder we get no respect in the polls and by the sports media. and before you jump all over me I am just a big 10 fan. Nebraska is so boring and common I watch replays of the game just so I can go to sleep. and Wisconsin is so pathetic to hear they get in because the two other teams are better don’t get to go to a championship. this is exactly what I’m in the polls it’s a big 10 team loses they drop 10 to 12 spots but if a team like Alabama, LSU, Georgia, lose they drop what maybe 2 or 3 spots. The polls are so far up the SEC’s backside that they all can taste them in the back of their throats.

  15. bigboi30 says: Nov 24, 2012 5:25 AM

I’m saying this as a fan not a Michigan fan

That Ohio team and fans are so pathetic and arrogant it makes someone want to throw up and cover their face cause they call themselves a big ten fan.

All this crying about SELF punishment and letters to the president and now an Asterix net to the title game, please I’m begging you, crawl into a hole and stop showing how idiotic you are. We want to be respected around the collage world, not be known as the crybaby conference when you can’t get your way because your own players and coach can’t follow the rules.

Is like me saying if Ohio wins any championships they should have an Asterix next to it because you bought it and didn’t earn it. Please just grow up.

some people must be pathic and live horribly unfulfilled lives . . why else would they give a thumbs down to the very first post here about Burkhead? No doubt this is a down year for Big Ten . . . if you could combine Nebraska’s talent with discipline of Northwestern you would have a good Big Ten rep in the bowl games

  17. gorilladunk says: Nov 24, 2012 9:08 AM

I can’t tell you how much I miss seeing the Huskers on Thanksgiving weekend (ah, the Big 8 days!) but I have to say one thing being as objective as I can. Is NU the worst 10 win team in the country? I’ve seen two or three of their games this year and I almost feel badly for them. C’mon Nebraska, you can do better than this!

  18. kl5661 says: Nov 24, 2012 10:02 AM

its not the Badgers’ fault two other teams got outed. OSU fans have nothing to brag about, your coach hid evidence of rule violations, deal with it. just enjoy watching the most complete RB in the country Montee Ball.

  19. m2thejallday says: Nov 24, 2012 10:47 AM

Please just stop with all the negative talk. It’s getting really old and everyone is tired of it. Some of you Ohio State fans are making a really ugly impression of your fans.
Congrats to Rex for a great game and GO BIG RED!

  20. polegojim says: Nov 24, 2012 10:57 AM

@scoregasmic- nor do we need your confidence – ; )

Fact – OSU nor ND would beat Bama or LSU

Let’s stick to B1G Championship… which OSU would lose to a Husker team with Burkhead.

  21. scoregasmic says: Nov 24, 2012 5:40 PM

@polegojim- what? My confidence? How does that apply to anything I said?
