Wazzu stuns rival Washington in overtime to win Apple Cup

Washington State defensive lineman Kalafitoni Pole nearly had a winning fat guy touchdown when he intercepted Washington quarterback Keith Price in the first overtime of this year’s Apple Cup, running all the way down to the opposing 5-yard line before being tackled. But, I suppose an Andrew Furney 27-yard field goal to give Washington State a 31-28 win over Washington will do just fine.

It’s been a rough first season for Wazzu coach Mike Leach. The Cougars had just two wins heading into Friday’s rivalry game, and the accusations of player mistreatment by former wide receiver Marquess Wilson earlier this month became an unwanted distraction. Still, rivalry games are rivalry games, and Washington State now has something to celebrate this offseason.

Too bad a playoff will eventually render rivalry games like this one meaningless.*

WSU only had 16 yards rushing, but Carl Winston scored three touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, quarterback Jeff Tuel had 350 yards passing, but two interceptions and no touchdowns.

Washington State finishes 3-9 in Leach’s first year while Washington drops to 7-5.

(*Yes, I’m kidding)
