I note a trend in your posts: the closer a school becomes to the State of Indiana, the more relevant the school! Jefferson was indeed the man! Hope you read “Killing Lincoln” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. Follow that up with “Killing Kennedy” by same authors. Good reading and since you’re a ND guy, I know they taught you how to read…..writing, not so much. But I do enjoy short, pithy, to the point thoughts albeit without substantiation.

Maryland left because of the ineptitude of running an athletic program into the ground from a financial standpoint. Goodbye trips south and hello Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Have fun Twerps.

Back in the day, from the mid-1950′s when schools like Washington & Lee and Randolph-Macon made the choice to go to nonscholarship lower-level football, to the early 1980′s when the whole splitting up of the old University Division into Division 1 (and D1 and 1-A, and so on to FBS and FCS) happened, the sportswriters used to refer to the “Virginia Big Five” and the “Mythical Big Five Championship”. The “Big Five” were Richmond, Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech, Virginia and William & Mary. UVA did their ACC thing and didn’t play a lot of the “Big Five” from year to year (didn’t play Richmond for close to 30 years).

UVA was never even close to “contending” for the “Big Five Title”.

If all of you who say that the ACC’s essentially dead in the water are correct, I’m pretty sure that UVA isn’t leaving the ACC unless VT leaves, too. They may not go to the same place, but I foresee some legislative pressure on either one if either school chooses to bolt the ACC for greener pastures without the other also getting a greener pasture. That same legislative pressure is what tipped the scale to get VT in the ACC to begin with. UVA was leaned on hard to lobby for VT, and I’m not so sure at the time that they cared one way or the other. The Commonwealth of Virginia doesn’t give the financial support to either school that they used to, but the General Assembly and the Governor still have a big say in what goes on, make no mistake.

Obviously UVA is not relevant in football and never really has been, but that doesn’t matter. Past relevance and tradition really doesn’t matter anymore. Look at Oregon, they did it (with a huge help from Nike of course) but they still did it. Virginia has some damn good football talent and let’s see how long VT sticks with Beamer, the longer they keep him the better for UVA.

I just think UVA has a lot of upside as a football program.

Wishful think on their part. Problem is, no one wants them so their commitment to the ACC proves the decline in that conference. Just like the Big lEast. Irreevalent!

Vir-WHO???? Is this the same team that handed UM it most embarrassing loss (48-0 Orange Bowl Finale) in the history of the program. I believe it was. Aside from that, who cares what Virginia does. An irrelevant program in an irrelevant conference.

UVA provides the proverbial “commitment” to the ACC. This is similar to an NFL owner who “stands behind” his head coach. It’s always just a matter of time before that head coach gets the axe.

The irony is that the ACC started this all. If UVA doesn’t leave, then another team will, and the ACC will be a shell of itself.
