There is some really lazy journalism in this article.

To point out that Dan Hawkins was given 5 full years and that Embree was only given 2 implies one was given preferential treatment because he was white.

If the author had simply done 5 minutes of research as to why that was, he would have learned that Buff fans were nearly unanimous in wanting Hawkins out early but the athletic department was simply too cash strapped to do so (they were running big budget defecits at the time) and simply did not have the money for a buyout. Fortunately for them, the move from the Big 12 to the PAC 12 resulted in the annual TV revenue going from about $8 million a year to over $20 million a year. In simplest terms, they now have the cash to actually get rid of a coach they want to get rid of.

Heck, I am not even a Colorado fan and even I know the back round there. I guess though in this age of "internet journalism" authors are more interested with getting stories on line first rather that getting all the facts before going to print.

Attn: 11inthebox, your wrong One of my favorite coaches is Charlie Strong, because he is a great player and coach with respect to his team. Another is Herman Edwards like him too!I am not into racist crap, when I coached little league I went way out of my way to pick up several black kids that played for me. Took them to practice and games on saturdays because they had no one to take them, their parents worked late. Figured the time and money I had in doing that one year at the request of my wife. Cost me the overtime I could have made, gas, breakfast for the kids on gameday--- $9,000.00. @ what I made 23.50/hr plus overtime. Name me a black coach that would have done that for a group of white kids. Oh I still retained all my reciepts just in case someone wanted to learn to coach, I could show them what they were going to miss. But I had a great 7 years of it. saw some of my kids were the counties leading scorers and qbs. Seen some play in colleges, FSU, FLORIDA AND MIAMI, Took great pride in knowing those kids

Nobody was beating down this guy's front door to be a head coach. It was a marriage of convenience. They were trading a head coaching position with a low salary against his loyalty to the program and his lack of coaching experience. Embree and his equally unqualified coordinators just didn't live up to what little they were offered. Now CU has more to offer andthey will expect more in return.

People said the same thing when the Irish fired Tyrone Willingham & just as it was BS then, it's BS now. Big time CFB is a results-oriented profession where school cannot afford, literally, to have a "rebuilding period." So much money is riding on bowl appearances & conference championships that if you don't perform in a quick fashion, then you are rightfully shown the door. The clearest example of this win now mentality was Gene Chizik being fired only 2 years removed from a BCS Championship. Everyone around the team has said that Auburn would be successful in 2013, but the school wasn't willing to risk another lost year with no Bowl revenue coming in. Coaches in BCS AQ Conferences must know this before taking the job. I don't feel bad for this guy one bit & anyone who says race was an issue is just an absolute fool & needs to just look to Auburn where a WHITE coach was fired only 2 years after winning a title.

I think the subject of race is still very much a polorizing issue is sports as much as it is in everyday life. All we have to do is look at the post result comments of the recent Presidential election and its after effects and realize we still have a lot of work to do.

I agree with the majority of comments thus far in regards to Embree was fired for doing a poor coaching job. So was Ellis Johnson at Southern Miss, who took over a 12-2 team and went 0-12...so was Derrick Dooley at Tennessee, who only went 4-17 in the sec, including 0-12 vs the Vols biggest rivals.

the only issue I have is what Embree said about black coaches not getting another oppurtunity to be a head coach at the D1 level, while their white counterparts, some of whom have never had success, get oppurtunity after oppurtunity on name recognition alone. That holds true.

as for my statement about Charlie Strong and Turner Gill both being denied head coaching jobs in the SEC due to the fact that both are married to white women, some people are still not comfortable with interacial marriage in the deep south, especially with a black man and a white woman....there may have been underlying conversation in the background, especially with those who pull the purse strings at various schools(boosters and sponsers), but hopefully this wont be an issue going foward.

Oh but the theory that Ark wouldn't hire Strong b/c he had a white wife is backed up by what facts? Quit being intellectually lazy by name calling, bad mouthing & race baiting....it shows a lack of class & civility.

If you have an issue with Jamelle Hill's claims, take it up with her. It holds more water than what some anonymous person claims on this thread. Personally, I don't buy either contention about Strong, b/c he was still a very successful DC & recruiter while at Florida & South Carolina. I think that trumps both of those theories...just pointed out that Hill thought this was a reason coaches like Strong & Turner Gill weren't stronger candidates.

To set the record straight, Embree did NOT say he was fired because he was black. He said he wouldn't get another FBS opportunity (after FAILING miserably, my interjection there) because he was black.

BTW, for anyone on here comparing the number of black coaches to black players, get a freaking clue.

Some of the best coaches in America either sucked as a player or didn't play at all. Want proof? Bill Belicheck (New England Patriots) was a better, by far, lacrosse player than he was a football player. Want to question his accomplishments AS A COACH? Nick Saban's Wikipedia page lists him as doing nothing more than "playing defensive back for the football team". Want to question his accomplishments AS A COACH? John Calipari's (Kentucky basketball) basketball playing claim to fame? He was a point guard at CLARION STATE. Yeah. That helped him become a national championship coach. I'm sure he brags about that when he's on the recruiting trail too.

Being a good, even great, PLAYER has nothing to do with being a COACH. Just like it has nothing to do with being a sports franchise executive. Ask Michael Jordan.

Wow. Everything you said is bullsh—t. The part about Jamelle Hill is the most disingenuous. Of course that’s Ms. Hill’s role at Espn—to pacify the masses with stupid theories rather than the truth.

All I know is that I'm sick to death of hearing race injected into every situation where a person of color fails.
When a White man fails....he fails. When a Black man fails, he got a raw deal due to his color.
This coach went 1-11 this year and lost to Sacramento State. Colorado was blown out and destroyed in every game....but 2 all year. They average losing by 30 freaking points a game!
If the school wants to change coaches after a year this damn bad? They should...
Ellis Johnson got ONE season at So. Miss....that was enough to prove that he couldn't do it.
If you want a "level playing field" then you accept the bad with the good. That's life....and that's sports. Embree wasn't even in the ballpark of getting the job done.....so, GOODBYE. Can we please just all grow up now?

@v2the4:

U make some good points, but I take issue w/ a few of them. Bear with me...

Willingham got fired b/c he wouldn't recruit. He won ten games w/ Bob Davie's players (happens all the time, I get that). That success brought in a nice recruiting class...but it was in spite of Willingham. He wouldn't recruit Brady Quinn (4-star QB) until the family of his teammate, Chinedum Ndukwe, insisted he take a look at him after accepting an ND offer. Quinn was a lifelong Irish fan, so it wasn't like he needed a lot of courting. Then he "landed" two five-stars from Baltimore (Ambrose Wooden & Victor Abiamiri) who were committed to Maryland, but had to de commit b/c of recruiting violations by the Terps staff. The nucleus of that class is who Weis won with in '05-'06. Ty's next two classes were abject failures as he flat out didn't bother to recruit on today's level thinking ND would sell itself. Those classes were filled w/ 1-2 star players w/ a 3- star sprinkled in here & there. They were the nucleus of the 2007 team that went 3-9 under Weis. Not only did those classes lack talent, they lacked depth. Most quit or transferred soon after Weis was hired. That lack of depth & talent gave Weis a pass in 2007...especially after back-to-back BCS bowls prior to that. His mediocrity in 2008-2009 is what got him fired. Weis could recruit offensive skill players & light up a scoreboard, but he was not a good head coach. Ty wouldn't recruit & repeated this at Washington where he was known to prefer playing golf vs hitting the recruiting trail. At ND, his initials were commonly referenced as standing for Three Wood. If Ty were successful he would still be coaching. One can even question his "success" at Stanford which occurred when usual powerhouses were down. SC was struggling under Paul Hackett & UW was on probation. Give Ty credit for capitalizing on a down PAC 10 in at least one of those years. Of course, he was exposed in the Rose Bowl.

People cried about Ty only getting three years, but no one said a thing when Ron Zook was fired in the middle of his third year at Florida. Which leads to the other reason ND cut ties w/ Ty after year three. They knew they had to act quickly if they were going to land Urban Meyer. It was still too late, however; as Jeremy Foley beat them to the punch by firing Zook early & signing Meyer before ND could.

Now to Charlie Strong. You correctly pointed out that there may have been concern b/c he is married to a Caucasian woman. However, it has less to do w/ white folks having an issue & more to do w/ single African-American mothers having an issue. While there are far too many fatherless children in our country regardless of race, 70% of black children are fatherless...far & away the largest group. The thought was that black recruits w/ single moms would not be too receptive to a black head coach w/ a white wife. In other words, the father of their children walked out on them...now they're asked to trust another black man...w/ a white wife (inferring that a black woman wasn't good enough for him)..to coach & mentor their son. This position was also posited by Jamelle Hill of ESPN. You can find her conversation about this subject on YouTube. I think it was part of a First Take broadcast.

Finally, schools like ND, CU, KU, etc are never deemed racist when they HIRE a black coach...but then are deemed racists when they choose to fire a black coach. As for Ellis Johnson...he's an old white guy who will likely never get another HC opportunity. I don't believe he had ever had one before. All those years of paying his dues & he's fired after one year after finally getting a shot.

With Embry being a former CU player and grad, former asst coach on the national championship team from 1990 and highly recommended by Bill McCartney, who is the equivilant at CU to Bryant at Bama , Paterno at Penn St or Bowden at FSU, he felt he didnt get a fair shake, and maybe he didnt.

it appeared that CU got worst from year one to year two under his regime. I know they only had eight seniors...I know they were playing a bunch of true and redshirt freshman, but they were an awful team to watch and hear about weak in and weak out. His issue is he only got two years to fix the issues at CU, while the coach before him, Dan Hawkins got five years, and had losing seasons in every one of them.

What I do agree with Embry on is that once black coaches get hired and fired, they never get another oppurtunity to be a head coach, regardless of what conference they were in previously....

Out of 41 black coaches who were fired by FBS schools, only one was rehired elsewhere(Tyrone Willingham, fired after year three at Notre Dame, was hired at Washington....by the way, Willingham only got three years, the guy behind him, Charlie Weiss, got five years)

I will admit whole heartily some of these black guys who were hired, such as Mike Locksley(new mexico), John Blake(OU), Ron English(E. Michigan), Sylvester Croom(miss st, but would have done better at Bama if he was hired, but you know, his color made Bama pick Mike Shula), Jim Caldwell(Wake Forest), Randy Shannon(Miami), Larry Porter(Memphis), Jerry Baldwin(La Lafayette) and Ron Dickerson(Temple), shouldnt have been hired in the first place.

However, guys like Karl Dorrell(UCLA) DeWayne Walker(currently at N mexico st with no chance to win, was UCLA d-coordinator, passed over by UCLA for Rick Nueishal), Bob Simmons(Oklahoma St), Everitt Whitters(interim coach at UNC after butch davis was fired), and even Joker Phillips(Kentucky) should have the oppurtunity to coach again at other FBS schools.

Gene Chizik was 5-19 and was hired at Auburn away from Iowa St...Turner Gill, who was also in the running with Chizik(see Sly Croom above), was fired at Kansas by going 5-19. He did land on his feet at FCS Liberty U, where he went 6-5 this year.

Does anyone remember when Charlie Strong first left Florida, rumor on the street was that Arkansas(even though he is a native son) didnt want to hire him because he is married to a white woman? Louisville did, and now he is a hot name among sec schools looking for a coach, like Arkansas.

here is something to chew on....while there are only 14 black coaches for 125 FBS schools, the numbers in administration are even worse. Only 6 black AD's...only 2 black college presidents(both women) and 0 conference comissioners.

we see more black coaches getting hired in the nfl as head men, due to the rooney rule, and the change for advancement is a lot quicker than it is in college football.

Ebrownwareagle- go watch the press conference. Embree said he wasn't given a fair shot because he was black. Hate to break it to you but he was fired because he was TERRIBLE last year and somehow regressed this year. The school screwed up letting Hawkins drag on for 5 years and weren't going to make the same mistake twice. Regardless of what color Embree was. Cut the militant BS out. You sound like an ignorant fool.

Ebrownwareagle- go watch the press conference. Embree said he wasn’t given a fair shot because he was black. Hate to break it to you but he was fired because he was TERRIBLE last year and somehow regressed this year. The school screwed up letting Hawkins drag on for 5 years and weren’t going to make the same mistake twice. Regardless of what color Embree was. Cut the militant BS out.
People are taken the race issue to far. Bottom line is if you have losing seasons your fired. That's the way it is. Even in little league football. Take me I'm white, owner of (7) winning season, four undefeated, two one loss seasons and one five and five season (my last year there) and they fired me. I had five superbowl trophies. One bad year, not good enough, had a lot of injuries to star players that year. Gone. When you lose, your fired, that's it. No color, shut up and get over it. Oh by the way look at the Louisville cardinals coach, Black ain't he? still has his job, why? he's a winner, keep winning coach Strong no matter if you are black. You a great coach.

Ebrownwareagle: For your information, Embree announced
that he was fired because he was African-_American, before
that idiot McCartney opened his mouth.
When you surround yourself with incompetent Assistant Coaches,
you are doomed for failure. But Embree had a bunch of his
Colorado football friends as assistants, thinking that they played
football, so they must be able to coach. wrong!
Some folk are not cut out to be Head Coaches. Obviously, Ellis
Johnson is one, as is Embree. So, ebrownwareagle, for once in
your life, don't pull a Jessie Jackson on us!!
