Dykes is not SEC’able right now, Dooley made sure of that. But he can win at State, they’ve got the best fans in the ACC and deserve a winner.

Usually, the SEC coaching vacancies are caused by poor performance, so it is hard to say when one of the jobs might open up again in the future. Most coaching changes are usually made anyway, because the former coach didn’t have his team perform well in most cases, so I would still rather go to an SEC team, if I were a coach and in demand.

It is true that SEC is a much better conference than the ACC. But it is also true that it is tougher to compete in the SEC. Dykes can go to NCSU and compete for a conference championship in a short period of time. Competing with Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas A-M and South Carolina is a much tougher challenge than competing against FSU and Clemson. And if Dykes has success at NCSU he can patiently wait for one of the jobs at the top of the SEC to come open instead of trying to rebuild an SEC bottom feeder.

If he really wants to obtain coaching stature, an SEC school would be a better choice. The ACC is a much smaller conference than the SEC as far as importance in the NCAA is football wise, and he will be better paid, have a better recruiting time, and if he were to guide an SEC team to a good record, a lot more prestige. If you are going to be rebuilding a program, you might as well get the bigger paycheck while doing it.
