Those around Dykes mum on Cal rumors

Thought to be the odd-on favorite for the North Carolina State job, Sonny Dykes could instead land a position on the other coast.

Speculation out of the Bay area has suggested that not only has the current Louisiana Tech head coach interviewed for the vacancy at Cal, but that he has an offer on the table from the school. When asked by the Contra Costa Times about the rumors swirling around Dykes, neither the coach’s wife, Kate, or his father, former Texas Tech coaching great Spike Dykes, would neither confirm nor deny that an offer had been made.

The latter, though, did acknowledge he would think his son would have an interest in heading back to the Pac-12.

Kate Dykes said her husband had been on the Louisiana Tech campus all weekend, hosting recruits. She said she didn’t know if Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour, or anyone representing the school, had come to town. Asked if Cal had offered her husband a job, she said in a phone interview with this newspaper. “I don’t think so. If they have, I don’t know about it.”
Spike Dykes, a longtime college coach, when asked if his son would be interested in Cal, said, “I would think so. Who wouldn’t be in this business? It’s a great job, a great conference.”

Dykes spent three seasons as Arizona’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach before moving on to his first head-coaching job with the Bulldogs in 2010.

Prior to Dave Doeren officially landing the NCSU job Saturday, Dykes had also interviewed for the Wolfpack opening. He’s been connected to the jobs at Arkansas and Auburn as well.
