Florida hires Joker Phillips to coach WRs

Former Kentucky coach Joker Phillips did not stay unemployed for long. One month after being fired from Kentucky (although allowed to coach until the end of the season) Phillips has landed back in the SEC as the wide receiver’s coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida.

The news was first reported by the Gainesville Sun and was announced later by the university.

“We are excited to have Joker join our staff,” said Will Muschamp. “His background as a head coach and the number of years he has coached wide receivers will be a tremendous asset to our coaching staff and players. Joker is obviously very familiar with the Southeastern Conference and has always done a great job in recruiting.

“Obviously I had a number of experiences with Joker both on and off the field, as our paths have crossed often, but I’ve been really impressed with Joker Phillips as a man during this hiring process.”

“I’m thrilled to become part of the Gator family,” said Phillips. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to compete and win at the highest level. I believe in Coach Muschamp’s philosophy and what he has done in his short time here at Florida is phenomenal.

“I’m looking forward to contributing to the long-term vision that he has for this program. In addition, it will be very rewarding to be involved in the hands-on development of the players I will coach.”

Phillips has an extensive resume coaching wide receivers and is thought of as a great recruiter. He replaces Aubrey Hill, who resigned before the start of the season.

I hope he brings all the Kentucky recruits with him. Nothing like loading up the Gators with a bunch of two and three start recruits.

    @ ducej11:

He’ll be trying to get the very best kids to go to Florida now. Florida. Not Kentucky. Much easier sell, don’t you think?

That did not take long. Coach Joker landed on his feet quickly. That is good to see, for many reasons. Best to he and his family in their new home and move.

Best of luck to Coach Philips. He is a fine man who acted with class during his tenure at Kentucky. That is not an easy job but he worked hard.

Not sure why all the thumbs-downs on previous posts. By all accounts, Phillips is a first-rate recruiter and a solid coach. Not everyone that coaches is destined to be a head coach. Some guys are exceptional at a specific area, or areas, and maybe that’s what they should do. I’m glad he got his chance to run a program. Sad it didn’t work out better for him, personally. I bet he’ll be better off from the experience though. Welcome to Gainesville, Coach.

Well, here’s hoping the same recruits Kentucky was getting will now be going to Florida instead.

florida727: Now that is the perspective I was looking for! I think Coach Joker will work out well with the Gators. I am sure glad they gave him a chance so soon. I had no pull with any SEC team, but I was hoping he would get on with one because he knew the area and could recruit. He faced huge issues at Kentucky, but worked hard there.

You mean one of the guys who knows Charlie Strong and Louisville the best gets hired prior to the Gators game against the Ville??? probably just a coincidence……….

Kentucky had zero five star high school kids and only a few fours and threes.

Borderline Rust Belt is not good recruiting territory.

Seems as if the headlines up here are either Kentucky basketball or another pill mill being busted.

    Not a hotbed of football.

Joker did the best with what he had. I am glad he is still in the SEC.

Joker Phillips is a class act who always took the high road and was well liked and respected by his players.

The Gators will be well served having Joker on the staff and as the recruiting co-ord he will shine as he is well received by parents of prospective recruits and now he has a Top Tier program to bring them into.

This is a win/win for BOTH the Gators and the Phillips family who will now move down to sunny Florida.

    Give em hell Coach…….

You beat me to it! You probably stated it better than I.

I would like to join Joker in upper Florida (at least for a lengthy vacation!)

Congrats to Coach Phillips and the Gators! A win-win!
