APSouth Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is never one to mince words. Or give one single crap about what anybody thinks of him. That usually means someone’s in his crosshairs for one reason or another — or, perhaps, no reason at all because it’s Steve Spurrier — and we’re here to scoop it up every single time.
This time, Northwestern got the subtle wrath of Spurrier’s back-handed wit. The Gamecocks are slated to play Michigan in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, but it looked originally like the Wildcats, not the Wolverines, might be South Carolina’s opponent at first. When asked about the game Sunday night, Spurrier said, “If you beat or you get beat by Northwestern, you don’t achieve as much as playing Michigan with their stature, tradition and reputation. It’s something special.”
For the record, Northwestern is 9-3 this year while Michigan is 8-4. Granted, records usually mean nothing in bowl selection and the Wolverines did win the head-to-head with the Wildcats, but it’s not like Pat Fitzgerald‘s team is a pushover (at least not until the fourth quarter).
Still, Spurrier has a point about branding and what it means to play, and potentially beat, a team like Michigan. He just puts it a little more bluntly than most.
Which is why we love him.
