South Carolina gives Spurrier a contract extension

A 10-win season that made him the all-time winningest coach in the process, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has received a two-year extension from the university’s Board of Trustees.

The university made the announcement Monday afternoon. Spurrier’s contract was set to expire in 2015. This extension will take Spurrier through 2017.

“It sometimes can be difficult in the recruiting process when you have less than four or five years on your contract,” said athletic director Ray Tanner.

Not that Spurrier will be shoved out the door after the 2017 season, though he will be 72 by then. In fact he’ll probably be allowed to coach at South Carolina as long as he wants. Spurrier is not in line to receive a pay bump as part of the extension either, but the HBC makes over $3 million a year, according to a USA Today database.

The Ole Ball Coach deserves a contract extension. He has raised the pride of alumni, boosters have become enthusiastic, the record is reflecting he and his staff’s dedication to excellence, and he is now the most winning football coach in Gamecock history. Combine that with Coach Spurrier says some of the most poignant things from time to time, piquing fellow coaches and teams.

The Ole Ball Coach is good for college football, good for the University of South Carolina, good for his players, and quite entertaining for the rest of us!

Congratulations to the Board of USC in doing what is right. I hope we have many more years of the Ole Ball Coach on the sidelines with the Gamecocks.

Yessss! Few people in football are as downright entertaining as Steve Spurrier. As long as he continues to be the effective and wily coach we know and love, I hope the show goes on for years to come.
