South Carolina gives Spurrier a contract extension

A 10-win season that made him the all-time winningest coach in the process, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has received a two-year extension from the university’s Board of Trustees.

The university made the announcement Monday afternoon. Spurrier’s contract was set to expire in 2015. This extension will take Spurrier through 2017.

“It sometimes can be difficult in the recruiting process when you have less than four or five years on your contract,” said athletic director Ray Tanner.

Not that Spurrier will be shoved out the door after the 2017 season, though he will be 72 by then. In fact he’ll probably be allowed to coach at South Carolina as long as he wants. Spurrier is not in line to receive a pay bump as part of the extension either, but the HBC makes over $3 million a year, according to a USA Today database.
