Aluminum and “Toilet Bowl Cleaner” aka HCL, produces hydrogen. The ‘explosion’ is over-pressurization of the bottle with hydrogen. If there is a something nearby to light it (cigarette?), it can be a pretty good incendiary device, as well.

What they did wasn’t cute like mentos in diet cola. It would be more in line with phosphorous and water.

Not smart.

I agree – there are still first responders (and many others) with PTSS from that in Blacksburg. Explosions and gunshots are not taken lightly. But these two players -along with just about all the other current VT students – weren’t in town then and probably don’t get it. I can understand that too.

Still, I expect that this will be amended to a lesser charge, criminal mischief or disturbing the peace maybe, and result in restitution for property damage and also community service.

Any word if anyone was injured by the prank?

Wow. If this is the biggest “crime” the police in Blacksburg have to investigate, that city must be the safest place on earth. I assume there are no open murders on the books there? Perhaps this was very late at night and there was nobody jaywalking at the time.

The only hitch with their mentos/Diet Coke/dry ice/water “bomb” is that when the foil/toilet cleaner concoction goes off, it sprays hot lye all over the place.

Nothing spices up your night more than a good ol’ chemical burn!

I used to make these all the time in college. We used dry ice and a little water in a 2 liter plastic bottle.

It takes a few minutes, but you get quite the bang (like an M-80…if they still make these).

They should just say they were doing a sciene experiement.
