Based on the initial returns, today will determine whether Colorado or Purdue will end their search for a head coach. And whether Cincinnati will commence one of their own.
Reportedly.
Butch Jones, currently the head coach at Cincinnati, has interviewed for vacancies at Colorado and Purdue the past two days. In the midst of a tug-o’-bidding-war between the latter two schools, the Bearcats are looking to up the financial ante in a revamped contract in an attempt to retain the third-year coach.
All of the tugging and speculating as it pertains to Jones could end shortly as the Lafayette Journal & Courier is reporting that a decision, in whatever future employment direction, is expected to come no later than Tuesday.
Kyle Ringo of the Boulder Daily Camera reports that Jones, who spent Monday in Boulder discussing the Buffs position, was offered the job during the day-long visit. It’s believed the offer is in the neighborhood of $2.5 million, along with a financial commitment from the university to upgrade facilities.
After initial speculation that Jones had cancelled his trip back home, the coach did return to Cincinnati to mull his future. Jones’ agent subsequently confirmed a decision is indeed forthcoming.
“I’ve done plenty of these (hirings and contracts), and it will be decided by Tuesday,” the agent, Trace Armstrong, told the Denver Post. “This won’t drag on.”
While the Boilermakers remain in the mix for Jones, they also have at least one coaching contingency plan. The Journal & Courier reports that athletic director Morgan Burke flew to Ohio Monday to interview Kent State head coach Darrell Hazell.
