Predictions 101 — Liberty Bowl

Paul Rhoads AP

Iowa State vs. Tulsa
Mon., Dec. 31 – 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Memphis, Tenn. – Liberty Bowl Memorial

Way back on Sept. 1, Iowa State defeated Tulsa 38-23 in Ames, Iowa.

Let’s zoom ahead to the bowl-game rematch. A few things have changed.

Iowa State (6-6) held on by its fingernails, losing five of its last seven games, nearly missing the postseason. Tulsa (10-3), meanwhile, became a dominant force in Conference USA and defeated Central Florida 33-27 in overtime to win the league’s title game.

Tulsa’s ground game – the nation’s 11th-best with three players (Trey Watts, Ja’Terian Douglas and Alex Singleton) all surpassing 750 yards – is going to drive the Cyclones crazy.

Opening point spread: Tulsa by 3

The pick: Tulsa 31, Iowa State 17
