Report: Houston Nutt interviewing with USF

Houston Nutt AP

It hasn’t taken South Florida long to begin interviewing coaches for the vacancy left by Skip Holtz. Of course, by “left” we mean he was let go after just three seasons.

Per FOXSports, USF is planning to interview former Arkansas and Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. USF has neither confirmed nor denied that report. Nutt spent three seasons at Ole Miss after spending a decade at Arkansas. He led the Razorbacks to a 75-48 record before resigning following the 2007 regular season.

Other names that have been connected — at least loosely — to the USF job are Willie Taggart (Western Kentucky, who also reportedly interviewed Tuesday), Mario Cristobal (FIU), Dan McCarney (North Texas)  and Ron Zook (!!!!).

Heard the Kent State coach took the Purdue job. I guess that means Jones is either going to Colorado or Cincy opened up the checkbook.

If I was a USF fan I would be disgusted with that list above.

Houston Nutt would be a great coach for USF – perfect fit. He would be able to recruit well in south florida and he is as creative a coach as there is in college football.

I guess the passage of Question B is putting a damper on some of his other options.

Go get the best coach for the position …. Bobby Petrino. You’re USF, you have nothing to lose. The current list of candidates in embarrassing.

I haven’t heard any thing this “Nutts” locally, or about any of the other guys mentioned.

Hell, if USF is considering the Nutt or Petrino – why not go for the real gem – Jim Tressel?

“Show cause” or not, the Bulls are not going to win anything next year with their current personnel and lack of coach – why not the “Vest”? He’s a proven winner and at least to me is much less distasteful than The Nutt or Petrino.

Taggart looks the best on that list. He isn’t a retread and recruits the area well. He has received the blessing of Kinnan at Manatee, and that is a huge step in recruiting local talent.

They never should have fired Jim Leavitt. I’ll be forever convinced that the administration wanted to get rid of him and used the slap incident as a justification for doing so. This program as spiraled downward as a result.

From a purely football perspective, Petrino, slimy as he may be, would be a great hire. The problem is that he would be gone as soon as he is able to get a bigger job. I don’t think Nutt’s the answer. He might do fine recruiting, but he’s not demonstrably better than Ron Zook which, nauseatingly enough, is another name floating around the internet. I’d love to see Sonny Dykes get hired, but that’s a pipe dream. He’s headed on to bigger and better things than USF. I keep seeing Willie Taggart’s name. I honestly don’t know enough about him to have an opinion, but from what I understand, he’s a very talented up and coming coach. Ultimately, this hire may very well make or break USF as a legitimate Div 1A program. It’s a game of musical chairs right now and USF looks like it’s going to be without a seat if they don’t step up.

Wow, is that picture great. Nutt looks possessed.

Nutt is not an above avg HC. Lazy recruiter & consummate over-signer

Looks like USF is trying to get a coach who is as inept as UCF’s George O’Leary!!!!

I agree with the poster who said that USF should go all in for Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggert….this guy coached at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh for four years, left when his alma matter, WKU called…he has went back to back 7-5 and his team beat Kentucky(an in-state and hated rival) and played Alabama tough.

I wonder what he could do with some real talent? he would be lights out….I have no idea what happened with Skip Holtz at USF…he never seemed to get the bulls up for a game, and lost way too many that he should have won.

with the fertile recruiting area around Tampa, St Pete, Orlando and in South Florida, the right coach could elevate that program to unknown heights. lets hope they make the right choice.

There is another guy who loves Tampa and I don’t see his name on the list. JOHN GRUDEN!

No one can call the Houston Nutttt any type of coach, all hes good for is taking up space on a sideline.Nutt did nothing but screw up every team he played for in the SEC and imo hes a waste of time effort and a head coaching spot on any team.Petrino imo is one of the best to coach any team,BP has to be forgiven somewhere down the road.Piss on the Nutt, imo a big waste just ask Arkansas and Ole Miss fans.
