APAll the SEC job vacancies have been filled — for now, barring an unexpected event — and former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino did not land a gig in his former conference. But that doesn’t mean he won’t get back into coaching eight months after being fired by athletic director Jeff Long. In fact, Petrino may not have to leave Arkansas to get back into it.
Earlier this week, Luke Matheson of RedWolfReport.com reported that Petrino had reached out to Arkansas State about the opening left by Gus Malzahn, who returned to Auburn as the head coach. According to CBSSports‘ Bruce Feldman, there is at least some reciprocal interest, though how much and from whom specifically is not quite so clear.

Like we said when Petrino’s name was connected to Kentucky by Petrino’s father, he’ll get a shot somewhere. He’s been too successful not to get a call and possibly an offer. It just won’t be in the SEC next year, but maybe that chance will come from ASU (although it should be noted that there is reportedly no offer).
If Petrino’s ultimate goal is to coach in the SEC again, which it is, he’ll need to prove himself somewhere else first. What’s Petrino proving? That he can be successful, but without putting himself above his superiors in the process.
