Three days after adding Ellis Johnson to his new Auburn coaching staff, Gus Malzahn has given the new coordinator some co-defensive help.

Malzahn announced via a release that he has hired Charlie Harbison as the Tigers’ co-defensive coordinator.  Harbison will also serve as AU’s defensive backs coach.

“Charlie is an outstanding coach and recruiter and we’re excited to have him join our staff,” Malzahn said. “He’s very familiar with Coach Ellis Johnson, having coached together on two different staffs, which will be a tremendous asset to our defense. He is a true professional and one of the class guys in college coaching.”

Harbison comes the The Plains after spending the past four years at Clemson.  He also has extensive experience in the SEC, serving on staffs at Alabama (1998-2000; 2003-06), LSU (2001-02) and Mississippi State (2007-08).

“I’m looking forward to joining Coach Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn,” Harbison said. “Having coached against Auburn on several occasions, I’m very familiar with the great success and tradition associated with the program. This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family.”

Harbison is the third assistant added by Malzahn, joining Johnson and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.

Good luck Charlie. You will be missed at Clemson. You were a fine teacher and recruiter for CU and all your efforts are/were appreciated.

Gus Malzahn is building a great staff and Charlie is a good that can recruit well.I know Auburn should be happy with the turnout since Gus is cleaning house and rebuilding their program.Goodluck to Auburn and hope to see this an ass kickin team starting this fall.

Yes Charlie, you were a great teacher, particularly in last years Orange Bowl when West Va put 70 large on the Tigers! That was a record wasn’t it Charlie? Oh, hey Jonky. How ya feelin’ today? Takin the meds like everyone has been suggesting? Are you switching allegiances to the Auburn Tigers and leaving the Clemson Kitties? Probably a wise move as that would be the closest you come to the SEC. Are the G Men still stalking you…oh, I mean Jadeveon Clowney? I don’t think he appreciated some of the mean-spirited comments you made about him. Matter of fact you have a habit of making inappropriate statements about a lot of people, myself included. I would hope you mend your tactics and be more friendly.
Like me, The Gamecocker from THE University of South Carolina!

Seems like a pretty big overreaction to Jonkybon’s comment there gamecocker. Not everything has to be about the University of South Carolina. Not your classiest moment man.

You have to know the history between me and this nut case called Jonkybon. Didn’t mean to bore you with the South Carolina material. Merely trying to get a response from this character. I’ll cut it back,

It’s cool. You should just know in this particular instance you kinda look like the nutcase and he the sane one.

Hrm… not really sure what, but Clemson does need to shake up their defensive scheme. Back in the 80’s they had one of the best defenses in the nation… the last couple years they have been, oh what is a nice way to say it… not as good?

The offense will be one of the best in the country again next year… if the defense steps up, they could really have a great year!

Losing to SC and FSU this year is nothing to be ashamed of… they are both really good teams. Hopefully Clemson will show up and give LSU a good game in Atlanta!

Noted. In retrospect, agree with you.

WTF is up with Auburn & “co-coordinators”? Didn’t they do that last year as well? That worked out real well. You don’t need two guys to do the job of one; it’s just a waste of money.
