Jay Graham likely the only holdover from Dooley’s Vols staff

Tennessee Practice Football AP

While Derek Dooley‘s immediate coaching future was determined in late November, the futures of the nine assistants left behind have remained in limbo for the better part of three weeks.

Unfortunately for the vast majority of those, it appears their immediate coaching future has been determined as well.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, running backs coach Jay Graham is likely to be the only Dooley assistant Butch Jones retains.  Jones was officially hired earlier this week as Tennessee’s new head coach, leaving Cincinnati after three seasons that included shares of two Big East titles.

It’s expected a significant portion of Jones’ Vols staff will have a definitive Bearcat lean.  One who might have a past lean toward Rocky Top?  Tee Martin.

Like Graham, Martin is a former Vols players, the ex-quarterback who led UT to its last national championship in the first year post-Peyton Manning.  He spent 2012 as the wide receivers coach at USC — on ex-Vols head coach Lane Kiffin‘s staff — following two years in the same position at Kentucky.

At his introductory news conference Friday, Jones was asked about the possibility of adding Martin to his first UT staff.  Somewhat surprisingly, Jones bluntly, well, Tee’d off on an answer involving an assistant currently employed by another school.

“Obviously, he’s a great coach,” Jones said Friday. “We all understand what he’s meant to this football program.

“Obviously he would be an individual we reach out to, but we’re going to reach out to a lot of individuals.

Of course, adding Martin would likely be wildly popular among the UT faithful, from both the ex-player-coming-home and outstanding-young-coach perspectives.  Poaching him from Kiffin’s staff at the same time?  Some very, very delicious icing added to that karmic cake.

If it causes Kiffin any pain, I’m all for it.

I say let coach Jones bring in whoever he wants. We are paying him to win and he has to trust his assistants.

Wow Dooley must’ve been worse than anyone realized

Makes sense. Jim Chaney probably doesn’t know this system and Jones has already said he plans to go back to a 4-3 on defense so obviously Sunseri is out. I don’t know if Al Wilson is interested in coaching but they need to call him immediately and ask if he’d be interested in coaching the linebackers.

whoever hires Dooley’s Oline coach, Sam Pittman, will be getting a damn fine coach. Olineman gave up like 6 sacks all year and the yr before he was ACC recruiter of the year at Clemson.

only other guy I wanted Jones to retain besides Graham.

Even if by some miracle Dooley had kept his job, Sanseri would have been gone or a full scale fan backlash would have taken place. UT had a potent offense this year and even a middle of the road defense would have won them a few more games. Pitiful, just pitiful

Jimbo, this is kind of funny.

Next year we return 9 guys from the No. 114 defense, but that also include 8 guys from the No. 30 defense from 2011. If Sunseri never works again, I’d say he earned it. Maybe that goober Arkansas hired will put him on the payroll, he doesnt have the first hire yet. LOL

Yup. The scary thing is I was very worried about the offseason staff changes going into the start of the schedule. This turned into a cautious optimism after we beat what turned out to be a pretty decent NC State team to knock off the season. Anything less than 7 wins before even going to a bowl was a travesty considering the amount of talent present. Butch Jones needs to find a good DC as his first order of business and then turn to retaining Bray/Patterson-who both need another year to mature IMHO.
