Stunner: McCarron returning to the Tide in 2013

SEC Championship - Alabama v Georgia Getty Images

And, in other news, water remains wet and the sky is still blue.

Anyway, and for those concerned that the impossible may indeed happen, Alabama announced Wednesday that AJ McCarron will return in 2013 for his senior season.  It had been widely expected that would be the course of action taken by McCarron, but the quarterback’s announcement put to rest any doubt as to his immediate football future.

“I had many goals for myself when I came to the University of Alabama,” McCarron said in a statement. “I have been lucky enough to achieve some of those goals, but some are still ahead of me. There were many factors in my decision to return to Alabama for my senior year but, after talking with my family and coaches, I knew it was the right choice for me.

“I love the University of Alabama, my coaches, my teammates and our fans. I am excited to have the opportunity to play with my brother (sophomore tight end Corey McCarron), continue to grow as a leader, continue to help our team win football games and develop even further as a quarterback. The NFL has long been a dream, but I think another year at Alabama can only help my chances of being successful at the next level.”

McCarron is in his second season as the Tide’s starter, having already won one BCS title and gunning for a second straight in early January against Notre Dame.  The Tide has won 24 of the 26 games in which he has started, a winning percentage of .923 that is second in school history.

McCarron currently leads the country in passing efficiency, throwing just three interceptions in 286 attempts versus a school-record 26 touchdown passes.

Suffice to say, head coach Nick Saban is “pleased” to have his veteran signal-caller returning for one more season in Tuscaloosa.

“We are pleased that AJ has decided to return for his senior year next season,” Alabama Saban said. “He’s done a great job for us and has really grown, not only as a quarterback and a player, but as a leader of our team. Like I’ve said before, we want to help our players make sound decisions when it comes to what is best for their future. Our goal at Alabama is to help our guys develop a career off the field by graduating, become the best football players they can be during their time here, and try to win a championship while preparing them for the possibility of playing in the NFL.

“AJ has great support from his family and the people around him. He showed very good maturity in looking at all of the factors and making an informed decision on his future. He has a chance to add to what he has already accomplished here while also better preparing himself for the next level. We’re excited to have him back for his senior season

    I saw the title and came to make a snarky comment, but then I read the first line and… well…

    By the way, there’s someone with a a higher winning percentage than .923? I am too lazy to look it up, is it in the modern era or the pre-scholarship-limit era? Either way that’s pretty impressive.

    No surprise, but nice to have it confirmed!!

    A.J.’s returning and so is that defense. Yeldon will be back as well, not sure about Lacy. But the team should be in good shape next season.

    I’ll probably catch flak for this but he’s a good quarterback. He’s not great and never will be. He’s been good at Alabama because other teams have to focus so much on the run that they get beat downfield. So Alabama’s running game makes the pressure off their passing game. We’ve seen what happens in the game this year when mccarron had to actually throw the ball

  5. freemantowilliams says: Dec 12, 2012 6:51 PM

    I’m a nole fan and I hate bama (that’s right dammit I’m jealous) but this guy can play. I’ve seen him make NFL throws against good defenses. McElroy was a tool but it wouldn’t shock me of this guy made it at the next level.

  8. kattykathy says: Dec 12, 2012 7:28 PM

    No surprise here.
    Will make much more as the starting QB on a Nick Saban bought, oops, i meant “coached” team, than he could ever earn as a NFL QB.

    Good luck behind that new offensive line. Stay healthy dude.

    Jay Barker posted a 35-2-1 record as a starter from 1992-94, for a .934 win percentage which was the NCAA record for QBs with more than 30 career starts. Not sure if it still is, though AJ will be right there at .933 if he wins next month and then wins his 30th start in the opener against Virginia Tech next year.

  12. Deb says: Dec 12, 2012 7:58 PM

    @Romulus …

    You had an exceptional athlete in Newton … but otherwise, do you like the spread? Hate that stuff myself, but it’s just a matter of personal taste.

  13. Deb says: Dec 12, 2012 8:00 PM

    @freemantowilliams …

    McCarron is a more skilled QB, but I like McElroy. He’s probably the best pure quarterback the Jets have right now ;)

  14. dcroz says: Dec 12, 2012 8:03 PM

    Correction: his 30th start would be in the third game next year, which would be against Colorado State.

  15. fishtales10 says: Dec 12, 2012 8:12 PM

    D-Y-N-A-S-T-Y!!!!! I can see it now, 4 national championships in 5 years!!!

  16. ronin262 says: Dec 12, 2012 8:43 PM

    Well as a Gator fan I congratulate Alabama fans on all their success. Next year we will all see how well McCarron throws on the run since he will have three or four new O linemen. You guys are gonna miss Jones, Warmack, Fluker and the rest.

  17. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Dec 12, 2012 8:43 PM

    @fishtales10
    Hold your roll there (see how I did that?!?)
    Let’s win your third one first before we’re talking about fourth or fifth there Lebron ( see what did there?!?)

    Kellen Moore at Boise State was 50-3 as a starter for a ridiculous 94.33% win percentage.

    @thecrazyasian …

    I saw what you did there ;) And I’m with you. We don’t need to be counting our chickens before they’re hatched!

  20. peopletrains says: Dec 12, 2012 10:52 PM

    Kudos to this kid for not be jaded by the success that both Greg McElroy and John Parker Wilson have had at the NFL level… wait?

  21. thraiderskin says: Dec 13, 2012 3:03 AM

    I’m going to guess he wasn’t projected as a first (or second or third) round talent? Good call kid, but this is a very weak QB draft pool, might have gotten drafted higher than his projection/skill level.

  22. 49ersgiants4life says: Dec 13, 2012 3:48 AM

    Smart guy get your degree and then use the ridiculous amount of sources you have to network yourself to get yourself ahead cause I just don’t see NFL talent in him but I see a ton around him

  23. domerhomer says: Dec 13, 2012 5:50 AM

    He should retire before the natty! ND is going to stomp him all night!

  24. normtide says: Dec 13, 2012 8:00 AM

    The kid can play. Even if his NFL dreams never shake out, he will always have a nice job waiting in the state of Alabama.

    Probably so. That Alabama degree should net him at least $9/hr in the right to work state of Alabama.

  26. normtide says: Dec 13, 2012 9:18 AM

    PB still mad cause he had to move south to get his $8/hour job. Looks like the rust belt is becoming right to work states, so maybe you can move back soon. Maybe you can save up, open a fast food brat chain. The women alone up there should keep you flush in cash. Maybe you can work things out with your milk machine, get back together.

  27. packerbadger says: Dec 13, 2012 9:36 AM

    Did that make sense to you when you typed it norm? I’d rather eat brats than possum and raccoon.

  28. normtide says: Dec 13, 2012 9:42 AM

    I would expect someone with a masters degree who is an ex astronaut/football player/war hero/entrepreneur/farm manager/pro scout/economist/physics master/son of Andre the giant to understand it. Did I leave anything out? Maybe all around internet bad ass.

  29. packerbadger says: Dec 13, 2012 9:55 AM

    You’re way off topic norm. You’ve got no substance. You’re out of arrows. I own your azz. lol! You’re too easy…

  30. normtide says: Dec 13, 2012 10:04 AM

    Which part was wrong? Just going by previous post. Own me? You can’t afford me. Don’t get upset because we caught your lies, just change your user name and start over.

  31. packerbadger says: Dec 13, 2012 2:05 PM

    Why change my name? I got more thumbs up than you! I win…you lose…again! I’d much rather be a Badger than an oil soaked tide.

  32. normtide says: Dec 13, 2012 2:15 PM

    Thumbs up? My point doesn’t need others to validate it. The south is where it is. Even you came down here, and you actually liked Wisconsin. You hate the south, but live here anyway. That validates my point. Add in how the sec dominates, and your miserable. The fact that a mid tier sec team took your coach, and that put you over the top. Put that on your brat on let your wife eat.

  33. florida727 says: Dec 13, 2012 2:47 PM

    Although, yeah, Alabama will always be “good next season” as several have posted, don’t forget that they’re set to lose TWO 1st Team All-Americans (Warmack and Jones), AND another guy slated as first-round NFL pick (Fluker). Thought I remembered hearing a fourth guy on their O-line would also go NFL 1st or 2nd round at worst. As deep as they are, replacing that talent and experience isn’t going to be a slam-dunk. McCarron will have his work cut out for him. So will Nick.

    Who’s that QB that came back for his senior year at Southern Cal? Matt somebody?

    because you inbred hicks couldn’t last a day living up North. You just proved the point. You southern hayseeds could NEVER move up here, we invade your southern territory like we did during the Civil War, which you still obsess about and is why you bandwagon every SEC team there is. you have nothing on us. When we move south, your women LOVE real NORTHERN men, go back to your barnyard animals chump LOL
