Butch Jones finalizes first Vols coaching staff… almost

Butch Jones AP

Six days after being named as Tennessee newest head coach, Butch Jones has put the finishing touches on his first Vols coaching staff.  Well, he’s thiiis close, anyway.

Jones officially announced eight of his nine assistants Thursday, with five of those, as expected, coming from his previous stop at Cincinnati.  Included in that southward Bearcat caravan are both of Jones’ coordinators — Mike Bajakian (offensive) and John Jancek (defensive).  Bajakian has been with Jones the past six seasons (three at Cincinnati, three at Central Michigan), while Jancek spent the past three seasons at UC.

In addition to the coordinating duties, Bajakian will coach quarterbacks and Jancek will be in charge of linebackers.

As previously reported, Jay Graham is the only holdover from Derek Dooley‘s staff.  The ex-Vols player will continue on as running backs coach.

Two assistants who were on Gene Chizik‘s final staff at Auburn in 2012 were added by Jones as well. Willie Martinez, who spent 2005-09 as Georgia’s defensive coordinator, will coach safeties at UT after handling the Tigers’ secondary this season.  Tommy Thigpen, linebackers coach at AU, will handle cornerbacks.

The lone position still left to fill is wide receivers coach.  Current USC receivers coach and former title-winning Vols quarterback Tee Martin was offered the job, but, after mulling it over for a day, decided to stay with the Trojans.

A time frame on filling the final coaching hole is unclear.
