Southern Miss grants release to part-time starting QB

Even with a new head coach in place, the tumult and turnover at the quarterback position continues for Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles announced Thursday that Anthony Alford had asked for and been granted his release from is USM scholarship.  No reason was given for Alford’s decision to transfer out of the program.

The move comes two days after Todd Monken was named as the replacement for Ellis Johnson, who was fired one winless season at the school.  It also comes two weeks after Alford was charged with aggravated assault following an on-campus incident.

As a true freshman, Alford started five of the nine games in which he played.  Alford was one of four players to start at QB for Southern Miss in 2012.

He led the Golden Eagles in passing yards (664) and rushing touchdowns (six), and was third in rushing yards (329).
