Fired by USF, Holtz officially lands LaTech job

Well, that certainly didn’t take long.

Dec. 2, Skip Holtz was fired after three years as USF’s head coach. Less than two weeks later, Holtz has been plucked off the unemployment line.

Following up on speculation that began to surface Thursday morning, Louisiana Tech confirmed in a release Friday afternoon that Holtz has been named as the program’s new head football coach. Holtz will replace Sonny Dykes, who left the Bulldogs to take the Cal job.

A 5 p.m. ET press conference has been scheduled to officially introduce Holtz.

Holtz becomes the first head coach fired during this latest spinning of the coaching carousel to land in the same position at another school.

Holtz went 16-21 in his three years with the Bulls, with a three-win season leading the athletic department to pull the trigger on his dismissal. However, and including stops at UConn (1994-98) and East Carolina (2005-09), Holtz has a combined record of 88-71 as a head coach at the FBS level.
